Castello di Gargonza wedding

A walled medieval hamlet on a wooded hill above Monte San Savino, with a square tower, a church, a piazza and forty rooms in the houses along its lanes, let out as a village rather than as a hotel.

A Castello di Gargonza wedding starts from €150,000, and for optimal results we recommend budgeting €250,000 all-in. There is no hire fee here: rooms are €250 and €350 a night and the wedding meal is €180 a head.

Forty rooms sleeping 80, a church inside the walls, and music until half past two in the morning.

Castello di Gargonza, Monte San Savino

Gargonza is a fortified hamlet on a wooded hill between Siena and Arezzo, in the comune of Monte San Savino.

It is walled, with a square tower at one end and a church inside the gate, and it was a working village until the twentieth century emptied it. The Guicciardini family restored it house by house, and it now runs as a hotel in which the rooms are the houses and the corridors are the lanes. Dante is said to have sheltered here in 1302, which the estate mentions and does not labour.

What it is not is a grand villa. It is a village in the woods, and the difference shows in the price.

Castello di Gargonza Wedding Venue

The event spaces are named and priced in the tariffs, and they are the parts of the hamlet rather than rooms in a building.

The main square

The piazza at the centre of the village, with the Bottega bar on one side. This is where the cake is cut and where most of the evening happens.

The lemon garden

The walled garden below the hamlet, used for the aperitivo and for a ceremony when the church is not the plan.

The olive mill room

The former frantoio, vaulted and stone, where the dancing goes and where the music is allowed until half past two.

The church

Inside the walls, a few metres from everything else, available for a Catholic ceremony for an offering of €700.

There is no hire fee

This is the thing that makes Gargonza different from everything else on our Tuscan list. The tariffs contain no sole-use charge, no nightly rate for the property and no minimum spend.

Instead there are rooms and there is food.

The rooms

€250 a night for a classic room and €350 for a superior, for two people, with breakfast and VAT included. There are 20 of each, and the larger units are arranged as apartments.

The estate asks that the couple do not resell the rooms to guests above the published rate, which is a fair condition and an unusual one to write down.

The food

€180 a head for the full wedding aperitif and meal. €80 a head for a welcome dinner, which includes the drinks and finger food at the aperitif, a classic Tuscan menu, ivory linen with jute chair covers, wooden tables and chairs, and an open bar after dinner from half past eleven.

A pizza service with a pizzaiolo and the oven is just over €1,000. The open bar after the cake is quoted separately.

The extras that matter

Using the main square, the lemon garden and the olive mill room for the cake and the after-party is just over €3,000 with VAT.

A location assistance fee of the same amount applies only when chairs, tables or furniture are hired in from outside, and it covers three members of staff from eight in the morning to eight at night with the estate’s own transport. Nothing hired in, no fee.

The SIAE music licence is €450, and the estate notes that the couple can file it online themselves for less.

What a Venue Without a Hire Fee Changes

Almost every estate in Tuscany sells the place first and the wedding second. A figure is agreed for the property, minimums are attached to it, and the couple’s choices happen inside a box that has already been paid for.

Gargonza inverts that. The budget is built from the guest list upward: how many rooms, how many dinners, how many hours of bar. A wedding of 50 genuinely costs less than a wedding of 100 here, which at a venue with a €40,000 hire fee it does not.

It makes this one of the few places on our list where a smaller wedding is not quietly penalised, and it is why we would put a couple with 60 guests and a real budget for flowers and music here rather than into a grand estate where the hire would swallow the same money.

The trade-off is that nothing is bundled. Every line is a decision, and without a planner holding them together a Gargonza budget drifts.

Music Until Half Past Two

The tariffs put it in one line: music curfew 2:30 am.

For a venue at this price that is extraordinary. Estates charging four times as much stop their outdoor music at ten and move everybody indoors at midnight, and here the dancing in the olive mill runs until half past two with no staged retreat and no hourly staffing charge attached to it.

The hamlet’s isolation is the reason. Gargonza sits alone inside its walls on a wooded hill with nothing around it, so there is no neighbour for an ordinance to protect.

The SIAE licence is the couple’s to arrange and the estate says plainly that doing it online is cheaper than having the estate do it. That is the kind of advice venues do not usually volunteer.

Accommodation at Castello di Gargonza

Forty rooms sleeping 80, in the restored houses along the lanes.

Twenty are classic and twenty superior, and the categories run from rooms to larger apartments in the bigger buildings. Breakfast is a buffet from eight until half past ten, and an extra hour of it is €700.

Because there is no buyout, the rooms are booked as rooms. A wedding that wants the hamlet to itself books all forty; a smaller one takes what it needs and the estate keeps the rest. That flexibility is the commercial shape of the place and it is rare at this level.

The Bottega bar in the piazza is open every afternoon, and the Pergola café by the pool does a buffet lunch daily.

Castello di Gargonza Location, Tuscany

The hamlet is at Gargonza in the comune of Monte San Savino, in the province of Arezzo, between the Val di Chiana and the Chianti.

Siena is 46 minutes and Florence city centre an hour and 13.

Getting guests there

Florence Peretola is an hour and 23 minutes by road and Perugia an hour and 27. Rome Fiumicino is two hours and 58, the shortest run to Rome of anywhere on our Tuscan list, which matters for a guest list flying from outside Europe.

Pisa is two hours and 25 and Bologna two hours and eleven.

Magic Day Insights

No hire fee changes which couples this suits, and it is not the obvious ones.

Bring the budget, not the guest list.

Because the cost is per room and per head, a wedding of 60 here costs roughly what 60 people cost, with nothing recovered from a hire fee. That frees money for flowers, music and photography that a grand estate would have taken at the front. We would always put a couple who care more about how the day looks than about how the venue sounds on paper in exactly this position.

Use the church inside the walls.

A Catholic ceremony here costs an offering of €700 and involves no transport at all, because the church is thirty metres from the piazza where the dinner is. The civil alternative at Monte San Savino is €500 and twenty minutes away, and either way the legal side of a Tuscan wedding has rarely been this cheap or this simple.

Avoid the location assistance fee.

Just over €3,000 applies only if furniture is hired in from outside. The estate provides wooden tables, wooden chairs, ivory linen and jute chair covers as standard, and a couple who can live with that specification saves the fee entirely. We always test whether the hired alternative is worth three thousand euros before ordering it.

Design the night around half past two.

The curfew is later than almost anything else in Tuscany at any price. We build a long evening rather than a compressed one, start the dinner late, and keep the olive mill for a proper four hours of dancing instead of the single hour most venues allow after midnight.

Castello di Gargonza Wedding Planner

Magic Day plans weddings at Castello di Gargonza from the first conversation to the final farewell. Because there is no hire fee and no bundle, that means more than usual: the rooms blocked and allocated at the published rates, the dinners and the welcome evening costed per head, the piazza and olive mill booked for the cake and the party, the church or the town hall arranged for the ceremony, the furniture question settled so the assistance fee is not triggered by accident, the SIAE licence filed online, and a night built to run until half past two.

Common Questions

How much does a Castello di Gargonza wedding cost?

A Castello di Gargonza wedding starts from €150,000, and for optimal results we recommend budgeting €250,000 all-in. There is no venue hire fee at all, which makes this the most approachable venue on our Tuscan list: rooms are €250 and €350 a night for two with breakfast, the wedding aperitif and meal is €180 a head, and a welcome dinner is €80. Using the piazza, the lemon garden and the olive mill for the cake and the after-party is just over €3,000 with VAT.

How many guests can attend a Castello di Gargonza wedding?

The tariffs do not publish a seated capacity, which is unusual and worth saying rather than guessing at. What they do give is the sleeping figure: 40 rooms at two people each, so 80 guests in the hamlet. The event spaces are the main square, the lemon garden and the olive mill room, and we would agree the layout and the number with the estate before a date is held.

Can we marry legally at Castello di Gargonza?

Yes, and both routes are inexpensive. A Catholic ceremony can be held in the hamlet's own church with an offering of €700, which means no transport at all on the day. A civil ceremony is held at the Monte San Savino town hall, in the Council Hall or its courtyard, for a fee of €500.

What is the music curfew at Castello di Gargonza?

Half past two in the morning, stated plainly in the estate's tariffs, and that is late for Tuscany and remarkably late for a venue at this price. The party moves into the former olive mill for the dancing, and a SIAE music licence of €450 is payable, which the couple can arrange online themselves more cheaply than through the estate.

How many people can sleep at Castello di Gargonza?

Eighty, across 40 rooms: 20 classic and 20 superior, with some of the larger units arranged as apartments. All of them are in the restored houses of the hamlet, so a wedding that books the village has every guest inside the walls. Breakfast is served from eight until half past ten and an extra hour of it is €700.

Which airport do guests fly into for Castello di Gargonza?

Florence Peretola is the airport to use, an hour and 23 minutes by road, with Perugia an hour and 27 as an alternative. Siena is 46 minutes and Florence city centre an hour and 13. Rome Fiumicino is two hours and 58, which is the shortest run to Rome of any venue on our Tuscan list.

When is the best time of year for a Castello di Gargonza wedding?

May or September. Nothing in the tariffs moves with the season, so the choice is entirely about weather and availability, and at this altitude in the Val di Chiana the summer is more bearable than it is further south.
