Château de Fonscolombe wedding

Denis Boyer de Fonscolombe, a merchant and consul of Aix, bought the land in 1712. The state’s own heritage record dates the house to about 1730, built for Honoré Boyer, and it was enlarged through that decade until it had the floor of grand salons it still has. An earthquake around 1850 rearranged parts of it, which is why the building does not read as purely eighteenth-century when you stand in front of it.

The park is the better story. The estate passed by marriage to the Saporta family, and Gaston de Saporta, palaeobotanist and a correspondent of Charles Darwin, spent the second half of the nineteenth century planting it with something like a hundred and eighty species of tree.

Twelve hectares of it.

Not a lawn with a hedge around it but a collection, and the reason the park is protected.

The château, the park, the dovecotes, the south terrace and the chapel are all classified historic monuments, by decree of 30 September 1994, with the outbuildings listed separately five years earlier. Classification is the higher of the two French grades and it covers the trees as well as the stone. The Queen Mother stayed here in April 1965 and planted an Atlas cedar; there is a stele in the park where it went in, and the suite she used still carries her name.

The family let it go after roughly three centuries. Hélène Martel-Massignac bought it in the mid-2010s and spent about eighteen months and a reported twenty million euros putting it back under the supervision of the Bâtiments de France, then opened it as a fifty-room hotel. It is five-star, it is Relais & Châteaux, and it is run by 2L Collection, founded by her daughter Lorène Martel.

The estate takes one wedding at a time and hands over the whole of itself for two nights. Here is how we use it.

The wedding dinner goes here, and the brochure is right to push it. Formal ground below the south terrace with the château behind it, and room for a ceremony or a cocktail at around 200 before the numbers that matter take over.

Everything outdoors needs a plan B in writing. The château provides an indoor alternative and charges you for it, which is honest but means the wet-weather line belongs in the budget from the first conversation rather than the eleventh.

Stone, pedimented, a bell above the door, standing at the end of an avenue of plane trees. It was named in the 1994 classement along with the château, so it is protected in its own right.

No capacity is published for it anywhere and we would not guess at one. A blessing here is the ceremony most couples picture when they say the word château, and a Catholic service needs the diocese’s permission, which is a phone call made early rather than a problem.

Know its hours before you build a timeline around it: dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday. A Friday welcome dinner and a Saturday wedding both land inside that window. A Sunday night does not.

The everyday restaurant, and the one that carries breakfast and lunch and the whole Sunday of your weekend. A glasshouse by the ornamental pond, facing the back gardens, under a bald cypress that has been there three hundred years.

It is also where the wedding ends. Music moves indoors here at eleven and runs to three, which makes this the most important room on the estate after the south park, and the farewell brunch goes in it the next morning.

Six of them across the main floor, restored to their original state. They are the reason a winter wedding here is a real proposition rather than a compromise, and they are where a wet Saturday ends up.

A heated outdoor pool in the trees, and a wellness room vaulted into the base of one of the two towers with a hammam in it. The Sunday pool party is in the brochure for a reason.

The park itself is the thing guests will remember. We run a tree walk on the Saturday morning for anybody awake, because a hundred and eighty species collected by a friend of Darwin is a better hour than a spa slot.

Fifty rooms and suites, sleeping 110, and you take all of them. Château de Fonscolombe only does weddings on a full privatisation for a minimum of two nights, and the rate includes every room with breakfast. There is nothing here to negotiate, no block to hold, and no second hotel to brief.

The rooms run from 20 to 58 square metres across eight categories, all looking onto the garden, the park or the inner courtyard. Some sit in the château itself and the rest in the restored outbuildings around it, which is a distinction worth making early because it is the one thing your guest list will notice.

The suite the Queen Mother used still carries her name.

Give it to whoever will enjoy the story most, which is rarely the couple.

Here is the arithmetic that decides this venue. A hundred and ten beds against a hundred and thirty covers means the château sleeps almost everyone it will feed, and at 110 guests it sleeps all of them. No transfers, no midnight taxis, no morning-after scramble across Aix. We have not found another property in Provence at this budget where that is true.

The estate sits on the Route de Saint-Canadet at Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, about twenty minutes north of Aix-en-Provence in the Durance valley, with the Luberon beyond it and Sainte-Victoire behind.

It shares a commune with Château La Coste, ten minutes down the road, which makes this the rare corner of Provence where a couple can walk two estates of this size in one afternoon.

Marseille Provence Airport is 45 minutes by road. No US carrier flies there direct, so American guests connect through Paris, London or Amsterdam. British guests fly direct, with British Airways daily from Heathrow and the low-cost carriers out of the secondary London airports.

Nice is an hour and fifty minutes. Worth it only for guests already on the Riviera.

Aix-en-Provence TGV is 30 minutes from the gates and Marseille Saint-Charles about 45. Paris to Aix takes three hours and delivers guests rested rather than queuing at a second gate.

There is a helipad on the estate that takes two machines, and Aix-les-Milles handles business aviation 25 minutes away. At this budget we schedule the helicopter arrivals well clear of the ceremony.

The A7 and the A51 are both close and there is parking on site, with charging for the cars that need it. Guests are sleeping here, so the road matters less than it does anywhere else on our Provence list.

Château de Fonscolombe sells one thing: the whole estate, for a minimum of two nights, with all 50 rooms and breakfast inside the figure. Across those two nights that runs €40,000 from November to April, around €50,000 in October, and €70,000 from May to September.

That is the lowest entry figure of any full-château buyout in this part of Provence, and it is the reason we send so many weddings here.

Catering is charged per head on top, and below 130 guests the château’s own kitchen cooks it. At this address that is the point rather than a restriction, because the kitchen holds a star. Above 130 an outside caterer comes in, which is why we build weddings here at the count the château’s own kitchen serves.

Design, florals, lighting, sound, the wet-weather alternative, entertainment, photography, stationery and transfers all sit outside the château’s figure. A Magic Day wedding at Château de Fonscolombe starts at €350,000 and lands near €500,000 at 110 guests with full production.

The two numbers are the whole venue. A hundred and ten beds, a hundred and thirty covers. Under 110 the estate does everything and nobody leaves the grounds. Between 110 and 130 you are running transfers for the overflow and losing the thing you came for. Above 130 an outside caterer takes over, and the starred kitchen that brought you here steps back.

Eleven outside, three inside, and the move between them is the evening’s shape. Amplified music outdoors finishes at 11 p.m. and the party carries on in Le Temps Suspendu until three. We build the night as a deliberate change of room rather than an eviction: speeches and the first dance in the south park before eleven, then the glasshouse, where the glazing on two sides means the garden is still there after dark. Guests who know it is coming treat it as a second act.

The starred table keeps restaurant hours. La Table de l’Orangerie serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday and that is the room your Friday welcome dinner wants. Plan a Sunday-night anything and you are in the other restaurant, which is lovely and is not the same thing.

Fireworks are possible here, which is rare in Provence. They have been done on this estate more than once. What we will not do is promise them for a July Saturday, because the Bouches-du-Rhône runs a fire regime from June to September and a classified park of a hundred and eighty tree species is not where anyone gets an exception.

The park is classified and that reaches your marquee. Staking and rigging in a classé park is not the same permission conversation as it is on a lawn, and it is one we start months out rather than weeks. Nobody tells you this at the site visit.

Winter actually works here. Six restored salons and a star in the kitchen mean a February wedding is a real option at roughly half the summer hire. We recommend it more often than couples expect, particularly for a guest list that is mostly travelling anyway.

It shares a commune with Château La Coste. Ten minutes apart, and they solve opposite problems: Fonscolombe sleeps your whole wedding and cooks it, La Coste gives you forty works of art and keeps the public in the garden. Couples touring one should see the other the same afternoon.

The estate makes its own wine and does not make a fuss about it. Organic, under the Coteaux d’Aix appellation. The sommelier will build a pairing from it, and it costs less than the equivalent from a list.

Château de Fonscolombe requires couples to appoint a wedding planner before it will take the booking. That is not a preference we are reporting, it is a condition of the contract, and it tells you how the château understands the division of labour. It provides the estate for two nights, all 50 rooms with breakfast, a classified park and a kitchen that cooks for up to 130. Design, florals, production, entertainment, transfers, the wet-weather alternative that its own terms make your responsibility, and the shape of three days across a protected monument are the planner’s work.

There is a case for a planner who has read the classement. The park is classé, so what you may drive into the ground is a permission conversation rather than a supplier one. The curfew is unwritten, which is an opportunity if you get it in writing early and a problem if you find out on the night. And the gap between 110 beds and 130 covers is the single decision that makes or unmakes a wedding here, because the twenty guests who tip you over it cost far more than their dinner.
