Château de Tourreau wedding

The Tourreau family bought this land in 1612 and raised the chapel that still stands on it. Between 1750 and 1770, François Bénézet de Tourreau commissioned the architect Brun to build the château beside it. François Paul Bénézet de Tourreau served as a Grey Musketeer to the King of France, and the estate came through the Revolution untouched.

Six salons run through the main house, restored in traditional Provençal colours. A Baccarat crystal chandelier hangs above an 18th-century Sheraton table in the dining room, and the library climbs to high ceilings before it opens into the first-floor master suites. The billiard room keeps its original oak panelling — which is where everyone ends up after dinner.

Here is how we build the day across the estate.

Guests come through the main gates and down an avenue of ancient plane trees, the north façade waiting at the end of it. Welcome drinks go on the gravel forecourt, between the stone urns. It is where a wedding stops being an itinerary and starts being a party.

Three places to marry — and they are not interchangeable. The consecrated 17th-century chapel seats 70 and carries four centuries of stone and quiet behind it. The south park sets the couple before an octagonal fountain with a jet d’eau, guests on the lawn, and it holds the full 150. The south façade is the third, honey-coloured stone rising behind the altar.

Choose the chapel and you are choosing 70 people at the ceremony. Everyone else waits outside for you.

Guests drift through the château or around the grounds to the pool. Twenty-five metres of still water holding the sky, a summer kitchen and pool house behind it so catering works out of sight. A hundred and fifty people spread across the lawn and the stone terraces without crowding.

Dinner sits in the French garden at the south façade, tables aligned with the jardin so the hedges do the work of a floor plan. Dancing follows in the same place. The party runs outdoors until the curfew, between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.

Every event at Château de Tourreau happens outside. A marquee is not a contingency here, it is a line item, and we price it in from the first budget conversation.

Château de Tourreau sits in the Rhône Valley. Mont Ventoux stands to the north-east, the Luberon to the south, and the vineyards begin at the estate wall.

This is wine country.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is 20 minutes away, Gigondas and Vacqueyras closer still. Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and its antique markets fill a day for guests who arrive early.

Marseille Provence Airport is an hour south. Nothing flies there direct from the US, so American guests connect through Paris, London or Amsterdam. British Airways runs daily from Heathrow, and Ryanair and easyJet serve Gatwick and Stansted.

For US guests we push the train instead. Paris to Avignon TGV takes 2 hours 40 minutes, and it is a better arrival than a second boarding gate.

Avignon Airport handles business aviation, 30 minutes from the gates. The helipad on the estate brings guests down onto the property itself: 15 minutes from Marseille, 35 from Nice.

Avignon TGV connects to Paris, Nice, Lyon, Brussels, Geneva and Barcelona. The drive from the station is 30 minutes, and we run private transfers for everyone.

Château de Tourreau sleeps 29 across two buildings: the main house, and a guest house 20 metres away. 16 bedrooms between them, all en suite.

Nine bedrooms sit across two floors, and the first floor holds the two master suites. The Impériale opens onto a private 150 m² terrace facing Mont Ventoux, a whirlpool tub off the bedroom. The second master has a frescoed ceiling you look up at from the bath.

The upper floors are countryside-chic, and modern where it counts: air conditioning, fibre-optic WiFi, daily housekeeping.

The guest house wraps a Roman patio shaded by olive trees and jasmine, and takes 14 guests across seven en-suite rooms. Exposed beams, terracotta underfoot, more rustic than the main house. The travertine bathrooms and the linen do not drop a level.

29 beds against 120 guests means most of your wedding sleeps elsewhere. Hotels and B&Bs within 30 minutes take the rest, we hold the room blocks, and nobody drives after dinner.

Venue hire at Château de Tourreau runs €40,000 to €100,000, set by season.

April and October sit at the bottom of that range. Late May through September sits at the top, and those dates go 12 to 24 months ahead.

Catering sits outside the fee. Château de Tourreau keeps four approved caterers and you choose from that list. For 100 to 120 guests, budget €40,000 to €60,000 including drinks.

Design, florals, photography, video, entertainment, stationery and guest transfers sit outside it too. A Magic Day wedding at Château de Tourreau starts at €450,000, and passes €800,000 at 120 guests with full production. That upper figure is where a fully designed wedding lands, not a ceiling the château imposes.

Music and sound. The curfew is firm and so is the 90-decibel limit, which an on-site technician watches all night. Live bands are fine, but amplification goes through the venue’s own technical partner and nobody else. We build the timeline so the band peaks well before the meter starts mattering.

Fireworks. Spring and autumn only, subject to the calendar and the weather. Summer weddings do not get them at all, because of fire risk. Drone shows and coloured smoke are what we reach for instead, or projection mapping onto the façade.

Weather. Everything happens outdoors, so the marquee is mandatory rather than optional. May, June and September are the steady months. Wind arrives without warning in all three.

Caterers. Four are approved and we have produced weddings with each. One is refined contemporary French; another is farm-to-table and happier outdoors. We match the caterer to the wedding rather than the other way round.

Children. We send multi-generational weddings here before anywhere else in Provence. The playground takes the small children, the courts take the teenagers, and the grounds are wide enough that families never feel penned in. The pool needs a lifeguard, which comes with the brunch hire.

Welcome dinner and brunch. Both spaces are in the rental at no extra cost. The stone courtyard, fountain at its centre and jasmine up the walls, takes the welcome dinner. The pool terrace takes the farewell brunch, and guests stay in it far longer than anyone plans for.

Getting ready. The main salon and the library are bright and high-ceilinged, which is what hair and makeup need. The billiard room photographs better than either, oak panelling and filtered light. We give each party its own floor.

Château de Tourreau is a private estate, not a hotel with an events team. The hire covers the keys, the grounds, the sound system and technical supervision on the wedding night. Design, florals, catering, production, entertainment, transfers and the marquee sit with the planner.

There is a case for a planner who has stood on this lawn. Nothing here happens indoors, so a wet Saturday is a production problem rather than a change of room. Dancing has to finish where dinner started. And the gap between 29 beds and 120 guests is a transport plan someone has to own, across an estate where the nearest hotels are half an hour out.
