Domaine de Manville wedding

The estate lies below Les Baux, on the southern flank of the Alpilles, inside a park of olive groves with an eighteen-hole golf course threaded through it. The buildings are Provençal farm stone, arranged around courtyards, with lanterns on the walls and jasmine climbing them.

What separates it from the private estates around it is scale of a particular kind. Fifty-eight rooms is a hotel’s worth of accommodation and it means a wedding of 130 puts 120 of its guests to bed on site. Very few places in Provence can do that, and the ones that can are usually charging for a building rather than for a village.

A wedding here takes the whole estate for a minimum of two nights, running from four on the arrival afternoon to noon on the departure day. Everything is included except the golf course and the bistrot.

The other one, enclosed and scented with jasmine, and the space the estate photographs most. It also takes the breakfast buffet, either here or under the glass roof depending on the layout.

Indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and a fitness room, open from ten until seven and until eight at weekends, with a kids’ club running Wednesday to Sunday for children between four and twelve.

A Domaine de Manville wedding starts from €200,000 and lands near €350,000 all-in for 90 to 130 guests.

Two nights minimum. The booklet prices it from €20,000 a night in low season, €40,000 in mid-season and €60,000 in high, and the estate quoted €55,000 a night for a late September date in 2027. On two nights that is €110,000 for the estate before anybody eats.

It includes all fifty-eight rooms, the spa, the pools, the kids’ club, the courtyards and the grounds. It excludes the eighteen-hole golf course and the bistronomic restaurant, both of which stay open to visitors from outside during your wedding. That is worth knowing before the word privatisation does more work than it should: the estate is yours, the golf is not.

Golfers among your guests do get access to the course as part of the privatisation, and the couple and both sets of parents get a massage.

Breakfast is compulsory at €30 a head as a buffet. Beyond that the estate requires two further meals to be taken on site across the stay, and the booklet prices the whole programme: a welcome buffet with show cooking from €110, an aperitif open bar at €50 or €70, a four-course wedding menu at €150 or a five-course at €190, dinner beverage packages at €20 or €50, an open bar during the party at €25 an hour a head, a snacking buffet at €50, and brunch at €110 with a €30 beverage package.

On 130 guests, a full two-day programme of welcome dinner, wedding dinner and brunch with the bars running comes to something in the region of €85,000 to €95,000.

The decoration, the flowers, the table and chair rental, the tent if you want one, the musicians, the lighting and the entertainment. The estate states plainly that it does not handle those and that a wedding planner is required for a two-day privatisation, which is unusual enough to be worth repeating: this is a venue that asks for a planner in writing.

Fifty-eight rooms sleeping 120: thirty hotel rooms and suites across seven categories, and twenty-eight more rooms spread through nine houses set among the olives on the golf course. All of it comes with the buyout.

A hundred and twenty beds against 130 guests is the whole argument for this estate.

It changes the evening in ways that do not show on a budget. Nobody is driving. There are no coaches at midnight and no second wave at three. The brunch the following morning has everybody at it rather than the twenty who stayed nearby, and the welcome party on the Friday is attended by the whole guest list rather than by the half who arrived early.

The ten or so guests who do not fit go into Saint-Rémy-de-Provence or Maussane, both under twenty minutes.

The estate is on the D27 below Les Baux-de-Provence, in the Bouches-du- Rhône, in the Alpilles regional park.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is 20 minutes, Arles 30, Avignon 42 and Aix-en- Provence an hour. Marseille is an hour and 13.

Avignon TGV is 35 minutes and puts Paris two hours forty from the platform. Marseille airport is an hour and Nîmes 50 minutes. For a guest list of 130 arriving over two days, the spread of arrival points matters more than the headline figure, and this corner of the Alpilles has three within an hour.

Buy this estate for the beds. The €55,000 a night looks steep against a private château in the same valley until you count what a château leaves undone: sixty hotel rooms booked in three towns, coaches running at midnight and at three, a brunch that half the guest list misses, and a welcome party attended by whoever happened to arrive early. Manville absorbs all of that into one number, and for a guest list of 130 it is frequently the cheaper answer once the hotel block is in the spreadsheet.

The second thing is the golf course. It is not part of the buyout and strangers will be playing through your Saturday morning. In practice it is invisible from the courtyards and it bothers nobody, and we mention it because the word privatisation gets used loosely and this is where it has a boundary.

The third is the compulsory catering. Breakfast at €30 and two meals beyond it, all from the estate’s own kitchen with no outside caterer permitted, is a large fixed commitment on 130 people. It is also a Michelin-starred kitchen cooking your wedding dinner rather than a marquee caterer, and the price for four courses is €150 a head, which against a one-star restaurant is not a mark-up. That trade is the honest way to look at it, though it does mean a hundred and thirty people eating from one kitchen with no second opinion available.

We always build the two-day programme before signing the buyout here, because the catering is where the second half of the budget goes and the estate needs it fixed early.

Then there is the planner requirement, which the estate puts in its own booklet. Manville runs the rooms, the kitchen and the bars and nothing else, and it says so. Everything visual and everything on the floor arrives from outside and needs somebody running it, which is a clearer division of labour than most venues offer and easier to budget against.
