Villa Cimbrone wedding

The villa has stood at the end of the Ravello ridge since at least the 11th century, but what you see is mostly the work of one Englishman. Ernest Beckett, later Lord Grimthorpe, bought it from the Amici family in 1904 and spent the rest of his life rebuilding it with Nicola Mansi, a man from Ravello he had met in England, a tailor and barber who turned out to be a builder too.

Between them they made it out of pieces, architectural fragments salvaged from across Italy and beyond, set into gardens that run out to the end of the headland. Little of the medieval house is visible now, and that was never the point.

In 1938 Greta Garbo and Leopold Stokowski spent a month here together, and a plaque on the villa still marks the visit. The house went into decline during the war, and in 1960 it passed to the Vuilleumier family, who run it today as a hotel of nineteen rooms.

Il Flauto di Pan, the villa’s restaurant, holds a Michelin star in the 2026 guide, under chef Lorenzo Montoro. Much of what it cooks is grown in the villa’s own botanical garden, and the villa’s own kitchen caters its weddings.

The gardens around it cover six hectares and sit inside the Amalfi Coast’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Each space has a fixed role in the day, and the whole plan turns on one fact: the gardens belong to the public until sunset. The villa closes them at 8.30pm in July, and any part of the wedding that happens in them before then means paying to close them early.

The flow we recommend is also the simplest one the villa allows. A drink in the Four Dancers Garden as guests arrive at half past five, and the ceremony at six in the Tea Room, just inside the entrance. Photographs in the gardens, then the cocktail hour on the Terrace of Infinity from half past six to half past seven. Dinner at eight on the main lawns of the Two Fountains Garden, the cake and the dancing at ten, and the music until midnight.

It keeps the walking short and the moves few, and every guest sees the Terrace in the last of the light. If the weather turns, the villa and the planner decide on the location together by noon on the day.

It is for ceremonies only, and it is where most ceremonies here take place: a step inside the gate, easy for every guest to reach, and the natural first stop on the way to the Terrace.

The belvedere at the end of the Avenue of Immensity, lined with marble busts and hanging high above the sea over the Gulf of Salerno. It is the reason couples ask for Villa Cimbrone.

It takes a cocktail hour for 40 to 110, and a ceremony for up to 80. Any use of it before the public closing time means closing the gardens early, and that fee is charged by the hour, so it belongs in the budget from the first draft.

A semi-open Gothic hall below the villa’s suites, with vaulted arches and 150 seats at round tables. It is the dinner room when the weather is uncertain, or the welcome dinner the night before. A party in the Crypt means booking the three suites above it, so nobody is kept awake who was not at the wedding.

The pool sits under a pergola of wisteria and olive trees, for a rehearsal dinner, a brunch or a pool party. The botanical garden is for a family-style Italian dinner cooked from what grows around it, and it makes a natural second evening.

Nineteen rooms and suites, and the villa sleeps thirty-eight. On a weekend the villa asks for all of them for two nights, so the rooms and the wedding arrive together.

The two principal suites carry the villa’s history: the Greta Garbo suite with its sea-view terrace, and the Ernest William Beckett suite under a frescoed ceiling. Below them come studio suites, one with a spiral staircase and one with frescoes, deluxe rooms with terraces over the sea, and superior and classic rooms looking onto the garden or the cloister.

No two are alike.

With 80 guests or more, most of the wedding stays elsewhere in Ravello, fifteen minutes away on foot. We build the room list around the people who need to be inside the gates when they close: the couple, the families, and the friends who will still be dancing at two.

Villa Cimbrone is at the southern tip of Ravello, at the far end of the lanes that run out from the cathedral square.

No car can reach it.

Guests walk in from the town, fifteen minutes up and down Ravello’s narrow passages, and the villa sends luggage up by porter.

Naples Capodichino is the main airport, an hour and a quarter to Ravello on a clear road and an hour and a half as a planning figure. Salerno’s airport is 45 minutes away, and from Ravello it is genuinely the nearer choice. For American guests, connecting through Rome or Milan into Naples beats the four-hour drive from Rome Fiumicino.

Salerno station is 35 minutes by road, and Napoli Centrale an hour and five. Both take the high-speed trains from Rome and Milan.

Worth planning as its own leg of the journey. Every guest arrives at Villa Cimbrone on foot, from the drop-off in Ravello, and every guest leaves the same way at two in the morning. We light the route, place staff along it, and arrange help for anyone who should not be walking it at all.

Villa Cimbrone does not sell a single buy-out. It prices a wedding in parts, and the parts add up.

• The rooms: all nineteen, for two nights on a weekend, around €66,000 including VAT at current rates
• The wedding: a minimum spend of €50,000 on the food and drink together with the villa’s location fees
• The second event: a welcome dinner or a brunch on a weekend, with a minimum spend of €30,000
• The dinner: around €300 a head, with the aperitif, four courses and the cake

The gardens have to be closed to the public for any part of the wedding that happens before they shut, and that is charged by the hour. The restaurant and the bar stay open to other guests unless their closure is booked as well. A party after midnight means the marquee, its soundproofing and the extra hours.

Then everything the villa leaves outside its figures: the flowers, the lighting, the music and the marquee itself, all taken from its own list of suppliers.

On a weekday, the villa asks for neither the rooms nor the second event, which is the largest single saving available here.

The wedding starts when the public leaves. Visitors have the gardens until closing, 8.30pm in July, and the Terrace of Infinity is busy with them through the afternoon. We schedule the day backwards from that hour, and only pay for an early closure where the ceremony genuinely needs the light.

Book the restaurant closure, or share the evening. Buying the rooms does not close Il Flauto di Pan or the bar, which stay open to the public unless their closure is paid for. For most weddings the privacy is worth it, and it is the line to raise before anyone signs.

Check the Ravello Festival before choosing a Saturday. In summer the bands wait until the festival’s performances end, usually by 10.30pm. The festival also puts a concert in Villa Rufolo’s gardens on the table as the welcome evening.

Plan power as well as flowers. The villa supplies only a small amount of electricity to an event, so real lighting and sound come with generators, and they have to be carried in with everything else.

A Thursday wedding costs far less. On weekdays the room buy-out and the second event fall away, and the villa is the same villa.

Cold fountains, not fireworks. Fireworks are not allowed, and neither are drones or sky lanterns, but cold-spark fountains are, through the villa’s lighting supplier, and at the end of the Avenue of Immensity they do the same job.

Villa Cimbrone gives you nineteen rooms, a Michelin-starred kitchen and the Terrace of Infinity. What makes the day run sits around all of that: the timing against the garden’s closing hour, the festival’s calendar and the town’s midnight rule, the walk in and the walk out, the power, and the suppliers chosen from its own list.

That is the case for a planner here, and it is a strong one. The same villa can host a wedding that ends at midnight or one that runs until two behind closed gates, and the difference is entirely in the planning.
