Castel Bay wedding

Castel Bay stands on the hillside above L’Almanarre, the long sandbar that ties the Giens peninsula to the mainland west of Hyères. It is a Belle Époque mansion, white, balustraded and shuttered, with three hectares of park dropping away in terraces and the bay filling the view.

The setting is the argument. From the south façade the ground falls through umbrella pines and lavender to the water, and the estate has cut a natural amphitheatre into that slope so a ceremony faces the sea rather than the building.

The brochure sets out a route through the estate, and it is a good one: each part of the evening has its own space and the guests move between them.

Where guests arrive from four in the afternoon, among a fountain, lavender, eucalyptus and umbrella pines, for the welcome drink.

Dinner happens on the terrace in warm weather and in the mansion’s salons when it is not. The indoor arrangement seats 212 with a dance floor, which is the number that really governs a wedding here.

Where the dancing goes. It is the prettiest room on the estate and it is also the practical answer to the Var’s outdoor music hour.

A Castel Bay wedding starts from €150,000 and lands near €250,000 all-in for 150 to 250 guests.

The estate is hired by the day, and the rate moves with both the season and the day of the week.

In June, July and August it runs €22,000 midweek, €25,000 on a Thursday or Friday and €28,000 on a Saturday or Sunday. September is €19,000 to €26,000 on the same pattern. May and October run €14,000 to €18,000, and November to April €11,000 to €15,000. A September wedding therefore costs a couple of thousand less than August for better weather, which is the single easiest saving on this page.

More than most. The whole estate from nine in the morning until three the next, the 82 parking spaces, the couple’s preparation rooms, twenty tables of eight and thirty of ten, 250 chairs, twenty high tables, the indoor and outdoor sound system, a sound and stage manager through the reception, the cleaning staff, security from four until three, a parking marshal and the estate’s own team all day.

The catering, which comes from the estate’s approved list; the flowers, the music and the photography, which may be brought in provided the estate approves them; every hotel room; and the coaches, which are compulsory above 200 guests rather than optional.

There is none. The estate has no bedrooms, states it plainly and hands over a list of hotels and villas in the area instead.

That is the honest limitation of this venue and it should shape the plan rather than surprise it. A wedding of 250 here means a hotel block across Hyères, the Giens peninsula and Toulon, a coach operation the estate insists on above 200 guests, and a couple with nowhere on site to get ready the morning after. Against that, the preparation rooms are open from nine, so the day itself starts on the estate even if the night does not end there.

The estate is on the avenue de la Font des Horts above L’Almanarre, in the comune of Hyères, at the western end of the Côte d’Azur.

Toulon-Hyères is seven minutes away, which is the shortest airport run of any venue on this site, and it takes daily flights from Paris. Marseille is an hour and thirty-five, Nice an hour and forty. The brochure’s own figures of an hour and a quarter and an hour and a half are optimistic by twenty minutes each, which matters when 250 guests are being met.

Saint-Tropez is an hour, Marseille an hour and ten, Aix an hour and twenty. This is the quiet end of the coast: the Giens peninsula, the salt pans and the boats to Porquerolles are minutes away, and the crowds are an hour east.

The amphitheatre is what people come for and it deserves the whole afternoon. A ceremony facing the bay at six, with the light going down over Giens behind the guests, is the strongest single moment available anywhere on this stretch of coast. We always build the timing around that hour rather than around dinner, and let the cocktail run long afterwards.

The curfew is the thing to settle in writing before anything else.

Castel Bay sells the estate until three in the morning and says nothing about when the music outside has to stop. In France that hour is set by the département rather than the venue, and the Var runs to 23h. The brochure’s own design agrees with it, because the dance party is put in the glass room rather than on the terrace. Read together, that means a long outdoor evening and then everybody inside, which works, but a couple promised “music until three” outdoors would be disappointed.

The last thing is the beds, or the absence of them. Two hundred and fifty guests with nowhere to sleep on site is a real operation, and the estate knows it: above 200 it stops being a choice and coaches become a condition of the hire. We price the transport and the hotel block at the same time as the venue here, never after.
