Villa Belrose wedding

Thomas Althoff bought a hillside in Gassin and built a Tuscan villa on it.

That was 1997, and the conceit has aged better than it had any right to. Mimosa-yellow façades, white balustrades, terraces stepping down the slope between umbrella pines, on nine thousand square metres of private garden. From the road it could be a Florentine house that wandered four hundred miles west and settled above the wrong sea.

Robert Jan van Straaten has run it since January 2001, which in this business is close to unheard of. It shows in the way the place works.

The villa was taken back to the walls and rebuilt in 2026. Thirty-nine rooms and suites in a soft contemporary hand, marble bathrooms, terraces off almost all of them. A Leading Hotel of the World, and one of the smaller ones.

The kitchen belongs to Jimmy Coutel, who has held a Michelin star since 2017 and who spent five years here as sous-chef before coming back to run Le Belrose as its own address rather than a hotel dining room. He cooks the Var hills and the coastal markets, and he knows the growers personally.

Below the villa: a heated pool with a hundred and twenty square metres of sun terrace, a second pool for children, the poolside Le Méditerranée, a bar with a terrace over the gulf, a fitness room and the NIANCE beauty centre. Small, in other words, and complete.

Here is how we build the day, and the property leaves less room for argument than most.

Guests gather for drinks on the panoramic bar terrace with the bay in front of them. Vows the next afternoon in the gardens, on the lawn that steps down toward the water. Cocktails around the pool as the heat goes out of the day, dinner in Le Belrose and on its terrace, and the party carries on inside once midnight lowers the volume outdoors.

Everything faces the same way, which is the whole point.

The view is north and east across the gulf to Saint-Tropez, so the evening light lands on the town and the water rather than in your guests’ eyes. It is the rare terrace that is comfortable at exactly the hour you want to be standing on it.

Nine thousand square metres of sloping lawn and pine, with the bay beyond the balustrade. This is where the ceremony goes, and there is no second option worth discussing.

Aisle down the slope, backs to the villa, the gulf behind the couple. We would not stage it any other way, and neither would anyone who has stood there.

The gourmet restaurant: sage-green panelling, arched windows, a terrace running the length of it above the gulf. Dinner is served in the room and on the terrace, and between them they are the reason the guest count stops at 120.

The room is beautiful and it is not large. At 120 you are using every table it has, and the flow between inside and terrace has to be designed rather than left to chance.

Cocktails here, and the pool party if you want one. It is also the only space on the property that can absorb a crowd standing up, which makes it the pressure valve on the evening.

Smaller, higher, and the view everyone photographs. Twenty or thirty people, no more.

We use it for the welcome drinks and for the couple’s first quiet ten minutes after the ceremony, which is worth protecting on the schedule.

Possible, quoted separately, and the honest answer to bad weather or to a dinner the restaurant cannot seat. The gardens will take one.

Budget it in month one or not at all. A marquee found in week two is a different conversation and a worse one.

Thirty-nine rooms: 36 doubles, 2 singles, and the Belrose suite at the top of the house.

All of them were rebuilt in 2026, in a quiet contemporary style with marble bathrooms and terraces off almost every one. The rooms that matter for a wedding are the sea-view doubles, which look straight down the gulf, and the garden rooms on the lower floor, which open onto their own lawn and are the ones to give the families with small children.

The buyout takes all 39, with breakfast, and that is the shape of the deal.

Here is the arithmetic nobody enjoys. Thirty-nine rooms sleep about 75 people, and the property seats 120. So a third of your guest list sleeps somewhere else, and in Saint-Tropez in June that is neither cheap nor close.

We solve it with a second property nearby and a shuttle, and we solve it early, because the good rooms on this peninsula are gone eighteen months out. It is the single most underestimated line in a Villa Belrose budget.

The Saint-Tropez peninsula ends in a village that has been photographed more than any other on this coast. Gassin sits behind and above it, a hill village of vineyards and stone lanes, and the villa stands on the slope between the two.

Five minutes to the port. Far enough up that the noise and the traffic stay down there.

The property sits inside a private residential estate, which matters more than it sounds and comes back in the Insights below.

Toulon-Hyères (TLN) is 53km, about an hour by road. Nice Côte d’Azur (NCE) is 110km and about 90 minutes, though summer traffic stretches that. Marseille Provence (MRS) is 150km and about 90 minutes.

Nice is the one that matters for a guest list arriving from abroad. It carries direct routes from the United States and the United Kingdom where the other two do not, and we route American and British guests through it as standard.

La Môle – Saint-Tropez (LTT) is the closest airfield, a daylight-only strip that takes light jets, turboprops and helicopters. Anything larger lands at Nice or Marseille and transfers on.

Nice is about 20 to 25 minutes by air, Cannes about 15, Monaco about 25. For guests flying commercially into Nice in July or August, the helicopter is not an indulgence, it is the difference between arriving for drinks and arriving for dessert.

TGV to Saint-Raphaël-Valescure, then about 45 minutes by road around the gulf.

Port de Saint-Tropez is five minutes away, and tender arrivals are straightforward. The villa itself is on a hill and has no water frontage.

The structure is simple and it is not negotiable, which at least makes it easy to model.

There is no hire fee and no per-head venue charge. Villa Belrose sells the whole property for a minimum of two nights and sets a floor on what you spend on food and drink, and the wedding lives inside those two numbers.

From €60,000 a day for all 39 rooms, breakfast included, minimum two nights. So €120,000 is the floor, and most weddings here run three.

The rate moves with the season. The two wedding windows sit either side of high summer, and the September dates are the ones everybody wants.

€15,000 a day on food and drink, so €30,000 across the two-night minimum.

At 120 guests you will pass that without trying. Canapés run €30 to €50 a head depending on how many pieces, the wedding menus €135, €155 and €195, and a barbecue €160. A welcome barbecue and a seated dinner for 120 clears the two-day minimum roughly twice over.

Which means the minimum is not the number to plan around. It binds on a small wedding and disappears on a full one.

Sound, lighting, staging, floral, entertainment and a marquee if you take one. Photography, transfers, design, and the off-site rooms for the guests the villa cannot sleep.

We recommend budgeting from €300,000 all-in for 120 guests, reaching €600,000 with full production and a marquee. A smaller wedding does not get much cheaper, because the buyout is the buyout whether you bring 40 people or 120.

Late April to the end of June, and September into early October. Villa Belrose closes for the winter, and it does not take weddings in July or August.

That is a genuinely short year, and it is the constraint that governs everything else. Book 18 to 24 months out.

Music and the neighbours. Villa Belrose sits inside a private residential estate, and there are houses close enough to matter. The curfew is a volume limit from midnight rather than a stop, and the party moves inside the restaurant. That is a softer rule than the 11pm cut-off most of this coast lives under, and it comes with a catch, because the room you move into is the room you have just eaten in.

We plan the flip: dinner on the terrace, the inside cleared and re-lit during dessert, the band set up before anyone notices. Done properly nobody sees it happen. Left to the night, it costs you forty minutes at the worst possible moment.

Fireworks. Do not count on them. A private estate with neighbours, on a wooded hillside, in a département that issues fire warnings through September. We design the evening to peak without them.

The approved list. The venue keeps an approved list for sound, lighting, floral and staging, and we work with those vendors regularly. Outside suppliers are allowed with prior approval, which is granted often enough but not quickly, so we submit early rather than close to the date.

The rooms you cannot have. Thirty-nine rooms against 120 guests is the arithmetic that surprises people. We block a second property before the date is signed, not after.

Chef. Jimmy Coutel cooks a menu built round the Var hills and the local markets. Take the tasting seriously and let him steer it. The instinct to hand a Riviera kitchen a brief is usually wrong, and it is very wrong here.

Children. There is a second pool for them and garden rooms that open onto lawn. This is an easier property for a multi-generational guest list than its size suggests.

Arrival. The approach is a narrow hillside road inside a residential estate. Coaches are awkward and a fleet of cars arriving at once is worse. We stage arrivals in waves and park off site.

Villa Belrose sells you the villa, the gardens, the restaurant and the kitchen, for two nights or more, with every room and breakfast in it. That is what the money buys. Design, florals, staging, sound, lighting, entertainment, photography, transfers and the timeline sit with the planner.

So does the part the brochure does not mention. The property has no ballroom, so dinner and the after-party happen in the same room and somebody has to turn it around mid-evening. It sleeps 75 and seats 120, so a third of the guest list needs beds elsewhere on a peninsula that sells out. And the wedding calendar is two short windows either side of a summer the hotel keeps for itself.

None of those constraints is a reason to look elsewhere. They are reasons to arrive with someone who already knows them.
