Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc wedding

It was built for writers, which is the part everyone forgets.

Hippolyte de Villemessant, who founded Le Figaro, put up the Villa Soleil in 1869 as a retreat where writers could work. The Italian hotelier Antoine Sella bought it in 1887 and opened it as the Grand Hôtel du Cap two years later. The Eden-Roc pavilion went up on the rocks in 1914, four hundred yards from the main house, and the allée between them is still the spine of the property.

In the 1920s the American Frank Jay Gould enlarged it and cut the seawater pool out of the cliff. The Oetker family bought it in 1970, and it has anchored the Oetker Collection since.

Fitzgerald put it in Tender is the Night as “a large, proud, rose-coloured hotel”. Hemingway and Picasso came. Every May the amfAR gala takes the place over during the Cannes Film Festival, which tells you what the production capacity actually is.

It has held French Palace distinction since 2016, the rank above five stars that about thirty hotels in the country carry.

Here is the thing worth knowing before any of that. Nine hectares of garden on a headland, 115 rooms and suites, three villas, and a pool blasted from the rock. This was never a house that somebody converted, and it holds 300 people without strain because it was built to.

Here is how we build the day, and the property is unusually linear about it.

Guests take a first drink at the Bellini Bar, which looks down the Grande Allée and sets up everything after it. Vows under the pines on the allée itself. Cocktails on the Îles de Lérins terrace above the water, dinner in the ballroom behind it, then down to the Pool Deck while the music is still allowed outside.

Allée, terrace, ballroom, deck, and back indoors at eleven. The geography does most of the choreography and the curfew does the rest.

The number that governs everything is 200. That is what the ballroom seats, and above it we are building on the tennis courts rather than choosing a room.

One hundred and ninety metres of path from the main building to the Eden-Roc pavilion, lined with old trees and cut lawns, the Mediterranean straight ahead. Ceremonies of up to 450.

It opens only with the full buyout, and it is the reason to take one. An aisle that long changes what a processional is: guests are seated along it rather than in front of it, and the walk becomes the event instead of the prelude to one.

On top of the Eden-Roc pavilion, with the sea on three sides. Up to 100 for a ceremony, and the only ceremony space here that needs no buyout.

That makes it the most useful room on the property for a certain kind of couple. Fifty guests, a Palace hotel, and a budget that goes into the wedding rather than into 115 rooms nobody sleeps in.

Two hundred and fifty-nine square metres inside the pavilion, recently renovated, seating 200 and divisible into three smaller rooms. The terrace outside it hangs over the water and takes 150 for cocktails or 120 for dinner.

Use the terrace for the hour before dinner and the ballroom for dinner itself. Dining on the terrace at 120 is possible and we rarely recommend it, because it spends the property’s one great cocktail space on a course nobody remembers standing up for.

Plan it as a destination rather than an overflow, with its own lighting and its own sound. And plan it against the clock: outdoor music stops at eleven, so the deck is where the evening peaks rather than where it ends. The last hours belong to the ballroom.

The Grill sits above the pool with the sea beyond it and takes up to 100 for a welcome dinner the night before. The Eden-Roc Restaurant, redesigned in 2020, does the morning-after buffet for up to 200 and opens only with the buyout.

The welcome dinner at the Grill is the one we push hardest for. It is relaxed in a way the wedding day cannot be, and it introduces two hundred strangers to each other before anybody is nervous.

Past 200 seated, this is the answer. The courts take a structure, and the guest list stops being capped by the built rooms.

Budget it in month one. A marquee at this level is a six-figure line, and finding that out in week two is how a design gets cut in half.

The buyout takes all of it. That is the largest single line in the budget and it does not scale downward, which is why the guest count and the date are one decision rather than two.

Villa Eleana, Villa Sainte-Anne and Villa Les Cèdres are the ones to hold back for the couple and the two sets of parents.

The rooms run from the Classiques in the main house up through junior suites and suites to the Eden-Roc Suite on the pavilion. Junior suites are the bulk of the inventory and where most of the guest list actually sleeps, so it is worth walking a few before allocating rather than assigning them off a rooming list.

Cap d’Antibes is a pine-covered headland pushing south into the Mediterranean between Nice and Cannes, and the hotel sits near the tip of it behind nine hectares of garden.

Close to both cities, and detached from either.

Nice Côte d’Azur (NCE) is about 25km away, 25 to 35 minutes by road depending on the season. It is the only airport on this coast carrying direct routes from both the United States and the United Kingdom, which is why a guest list arriving from London and New York assembles here more easily than at most European venues.

Summer traffic on the coast road is the variable. We budget 45 minutes in August rather than 30.

Cannes-Mandelieu (CEQ) is the closest field and takes light jets and turboprops. Anything larger lands at Nice, about twenty minutes further out, and transfers on by road or helicopter.

Cannes is roughly 15km along the coast and Antibes old town a few minutes away. Yachts anchor off the Cap through the summer, and arriving by tender is ordinary here rather than an event in itself.

Everything turns on one question: whether you take the property or not.

From €1,800,000 all-in for 200 to 300 guests, and upward from there with full production.

The rooms are the bulk of it. One hundred and fifteen rooms and suites and three villas, over a minimum stay, in one of the two windows the hotel releases. Add the food and drink, which the kitchens supply and nobody else may, and the venue side alone accounts for most of that figure before design, florals, entertainment, photography, transfers or a marquee.

Buyout rates move by period, and April is not September.

From €200,000 to €250,000 for 50 to 60 guests.

The restrictions are the price. Ceremony at the Champagne Lounge only, a minimum of 20 rooms held for two nights, and no dancing or entertainment at any hour. For a certain kind of wedding that is a fair trade and we have run it happily. For most it is not the wedding they had pictured.

Buyouts happen in April and late September, and in no other window. The hotel closes through the winter, and high summer belongs to its own guests.

Two short windows against demand like this means the date is the first decision and everything else designs around it. Eighteen to twenty-four months out is normal here, and it is not a negotiation.

Scale is the argument. This property is at its strongest at 200 guests and beyond. The buyout costs what it costs whether you bring 60 people or 300, so the cost per head halves as the guest list grows. A smaller wedding is better served by the Champagne Lounge and no buyout at all.

Music, and the eleven o’clock move. Outdoor music stops at 11pm, as it does across the Alpes-Maritimes. What the buyout buys is what happens next: indoors the celebration runs as long as you like, and without a buyout there is no dancing at all, at any hour.

So the night has a hinge in it. We put the Pool Deck party before eleven and the late hours in the ballroom, and we build the move into the timeline rather than discovering it on the night. Four hundred and fifty people do not relocate themselves quietly.

The kitchens are theirs. Food and drink come from the hotel and no outside caterer is permitted. Treat that as a fixed feature of the property and design the menus with them rather than around them.

The amfAR benchmark. Every May this property builds and strikes one of the most-photographed events in Europe, inside the Cannes fortnight. Whatever you are planning, the operation here has done heavier. That is worth remembering when a supplier tells you something cannot be done on this site.

April against September. April is cheaper and the gardens are at their fullest. Late September has the warmer sea and the better light, and it costs more for exactly that reason. We send couples who care about photography to September and couples who care about the budget to April.

Transfers. Nice is 25 minutes at seven in the morning and closer to 50 at six in the evening in high season. We stage arrivals against the real flight schedule rather than a plan, and we hold cars at the airport rather than at the gate, because the approach to the Cap is narrow.

Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc provides the headland, the 115 rooms and suites, the three villas, the spaces and the kitchens, and it does that better than almost anywhere in Europe. Design, florals, staging, sound, lighting, entertainment, photography, transfers and the timeline sit with the planner.

So does the decision that governs the whole budget. The buyout is a fixed number that does not scale with the guest list, the two windows it is offered in are short, and above 200 seated a marquee has to be built and priced before anything is designed. Settle the date, the guest count and the buyout question together and the rest is design; settle them separately and each one constrains the last.
