Château de la Napoule wedding

The château stands on the rocks at La Napoule, at the western end of the bay of Cannes, where the Estérel begins. The Romans found the site two thousand years ago and the Villeneuve family built a fortress on it in the middle ages; it was then destroyed and rebuilt several times, spending part of the nineteenth century as a glass factory.

Henry and Marie Clews bought the ruin in 1918 and spent the next twenty years turning it into something else entirely.

He was a sculptor and she an architect and landscape designer, and what they made is neo-medieval rather than medieval: towers and crenellations, a cloister whose columns carry Henry’s invented animals, and gardens laid out by Marie on either side of a sixty-metre walkway. Marie founded the La Napoule Art Foundation in 1951 to keep it, and the foundation still runs it and still houses artists. A wedding here rents a working art foundation, not a hotel.

The hire takes the courtyard, the seafront terraces, the gardens and three interior rooms, and a wedding moves through them in that order.

Sixty metres from the main gate to the courtyard arch, dividing Marie’s French gardens from her English ones. Guests arrive along it and the central aisle takes a ceremony of up to 350.

Over a hectare either side of the walkway: clipped hedges, tall cypresses and a long rectangular pond on the French side, century-old trees and undergrowth on the English. They hold 450 for the cocktail hour.

Four hundred and fifty square metres facing the sea under the Tour de la Mancha, which Henry and Marie built with a sealed room at the top where their souls are to meet every hundred years. It takes 200 for a ceremony.

A nave with ribbed vaults, stained glass and a round granite table, and the old ballroom beside it at 150 seats. This is where the dancing has to be, and where dinner goes if fewer than 200 guests are rained on.

A Château de la Napoule wedding starts from €150,000 and lands near €300,000 all-in for 150 to 450 guests.

Two shapes, both before VAT at 20%. A partial day gives the château from seven in the evening until three in the morning and costs between €11,000 and €12,000, with set-up in two windows and an extra hour at €600. A full day gives it from six in the morning until three and costs €21,000.

From 2027 a Friday or a Saturday can only be booked as a full day, which takes the hire on the two days couples actually want from the lower figure to the higher one.

The spaces, two foundation staff on site through the evening to run the arrivals and departures, and the château cleaned before the wedding and put back afterwards. That cleaning and security package is charged separately on each hire, at €800 below 200 guests and a little more above it, with organiser liability insurance at €100.

The catering, the marquees, the sound, the lighting and the furniture, all of which must come from the foundation’s approved lists; the flowers; the photography; the transfers; and every hotel room. Above 200 guests a marquee over the courtyard stops being optional, because the indoor rooms cannot take a dinner that size.

The château is on the avenue Henry Clews at La Napoule, seven kilometres west of Cannes where the coast turns into the Estérel.

Cannes is 14 minutes, Antibes 25, Grasse 27 and Nice 38. Monaco is 54, so this is the western end of the coast and the eastern half is an hour away.

This is the unusual part. The TER stops at La Napoule directly opposite the gate and the TGV at Cannes, so a guest list staying along the coast can reach a 450-guest wedding without a single car.

There is none at the château. Two public car parks nearby hold ninety cars between them and some spaces exist on the avenue Henry Clews, which at this scale means coaches and a shuttle plan rather than a hope.

The 2027 rule is the first thing to price and it catches people out. A Friday or a Saturday is now a full day only, so the hire on the days couples want runs at €21,000 rather than €11,000-odd, and the saving that a seven o’clock start used to buy has gone. We always model the midweek version alongside it, because at this château a Thursday costs half as much for the same castle.

The second thing is the sound rule, and it is stricter than the hour suggests.

Eighty decibels for an orchestra outdoors is quiet. Most of this coast runs limiters at ninety to ninety-five, and here that ninety applies only to speakers, with an orchestra held ten below it. After eleven the outdoor music becomes background and the dancing was always going to be indoors. Read together it means the courtyard dinner is a dinner rather than a party, and the party is under the Gothic vaults, which are good enough that this is not the loss it sounds.

The third is the absence of everything else. No bedrooms, no car park, no furniture, a fixed supplier list and an art foundation that has to be put back as it was by six in the morning. That is a large production on a site with nowhere to store anything, and the transfer plan is the first line of the budget rather than the last.
