Domaine du Mont Leuze wedding

The Domaine sits on the ridge behind Villefranche-sur-Mer, high enough that the coast is laid out below it: Cap Ferrat and Beaulieu on one side, the bay of Nice and Cap d’Antibes on the other. It was a farming estate until the end of the last century, growing vines, wheat and olives, and then spent a few years as the campus of a Canadian university. The present owner bought it in 2004 and rebuilt it as a reception venue.

The building at the middle of it is Provençal rather than grand: pale stucco, green shutters, bougainvillea up one corner.

What people come for is the view and the amount of open ground. Three terraces, a garden, a pool and a helipad are arranged down a hillside at about four hundred and fifty metres, and every one of them faces the sea.

The Domaine is hired as a route through five spaces, and its brochure is clear about which part of the evening each one takes.

The ceremony terrace, facing Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Beaulieu, seating 250. Guests come down more than thirty metres to reach it, which makes the arrival part of the ceremony rather than a walk to it.

Six hundred square metres of open terrace above Nice and Cap d’Antibes, and the space that sets the size of the wedding: 280 seated, or more than 500 standing. Dinner happens here.

Two reception rooms in the Provençal building, the ground floor taking 160 at table and the first floor 80. The first floor is where the party goes from midnight, and it is also the wet-weather answer for dinner.

A large pool with lawns around it for 150, used for a poolside party or for the brunch the next day. A lifeguard is compulsory whenever the water is in use.

A Domaine du Mont Leuze wedding starts from €100,000 and lands near €200,000 all-in for 80 to 250 guests.

The Domaine charges one figure for the evening, set by guest band, from half past six until half past two. From May to September that is just under €14,000 for up to 80 guests, just under €16,000 to 120, just over €18,000 to 160, just over €21,000 to 200, just under €24,000 to 250 and just under €26,000 to 300. Outside those months it quotes lower. A deposit of €7,000 falls due ten days before the date.

The reception areas to yourselves, the security agents and stage managers the Domaine requires, which run from two of each at 80 guests to four agents and two managers above 200, and the cleaning before and afterwards. Suppliers get in from one in the afternoon, and an earlier start is charged by the hour.

The catering, which is the largest line and has to come from the Domaine’s list of six houses; the accommodation; the flowers, the music, the photography and the transfers; and the brunch the next day, at just under €7,000 for up to 280 people.

Thirty-eight people sleep on the estate, in 19 bedrooms across three villas, three studios and two suites. Two of the villas have five bedrooms and the third four; the studios take two apiece; and the Bridal Suite and the Suite Les Cyprès are kept for the couple, both for getting ready and for the night.

The villas are let by the night, a five-bedroom one at €1,000 and a studio at €200, tax included.

Thirty-eight beds against a dinner for 250 is the limitation of this venue, and the coast below is the answer to it. Villefranche is 13 minutes down the hill, Beaulieu 12 and Nice 16, so a hotel block is easy here in a way it is not at an inland château. We always put the two families on the estate and everybody else in one hotel, because the drive back up the hill at two in the morning is the part nobody plans.

The Domaine is at 600 chemin du Mont Leuze above Villefranche-sur-Mer, on the high ground between the bay of Villefranche and the Grande Corniche.

The brochure puts it at almost six hundred metres; the estate’s own point on the map reads about four hundred and sixty, which is still high enough to change the temperature in August.

Nice is 26 minutes, which for a hilltop estate on this coast is a short run. There is a helipad on the property, which takes the arrival off the road altogether for anyone who wants that.

Nice is 16 minutes, Monaco 23, Èze village 11, Beaulieu 12 and Villefranche 13. Cannes is 47 and Antibes 41, so this is the eastern half of the Riviera: everything from Nice to the Italian border is close, and everything west of the airport is not.

The view does the work here, and the evening is worth arranging around it. Guests arrive at the Terrazzita under the trees, walk down more than thirty metres to the Vista for the ceremony with Cap Ferrat behind the couple, then climb to the Roof of the World for dinner as the coast begins to light up. We always set the ceremony late enough that the lights come on during dinner rather than after it.

The curfew is the second reason to look at this place, and it is better than the coast’s.

Outdoor music runs to midnight here, where most of the Alpes-Maritimes stops at 23h, and the party then moves to the first floor of the building until half past two. An extra hour outside is worth real money on this coast. The trade-off is that the first floor holds 150 standing against 280 at dinner, so a wedding at the top of the range does not all go upstairs together.

The third thing is the caterer list, which is stricter than it reads. Six houses are referenced, and going outside them costs €3,000 with tax plus a tenth of every menu, which on a dinner for 200 is not a symbolic sum. We always price both routes before the menu is chosen, so the penalty is part of the comparison rather than a surprise in month four.
