La Bastide de Gordes wedding

The manor has been on this cliff since the 16th century, terraced into the rock below the village with the whole Luberon valley laid out in front of it. Stone walls, olive trees that were old before the hotel existed, cypresses standing up through the terraces.

It is an Airelles house, the same collection as Château d’Estoublon down in the Alpilles, and the wines poured at dinner here come from that estate.

Airelles Gordes is a Palace. Fewer than thirty hotels in the whole of France hold the distinction, which the state awards above the five-star rating and reviews rather than grants for good. It is the rank that separates a very good hotel from a handful of houses, and it is worth knowing before you compare this property’s cost against anything else in Provence.

What separates La Bastide de Gordes from every other property we work with in Provence is the address. This is not an estate at the end of a lane. It is a hotel inside Gordes, one of the plus beaux villages de France, and a guest can walk out of the lobby and be in the village square in a few minutes without anyone arranging a car.

Forty rooms and suites, plus La Maison de Constance, the private villa with its own valley view. Individually decorated, and the register through all of them is a Provençal house rather than a hotel corridor.

The buy-out carries a list of things most hotels meter. Gourmet breakfast, the minibar, access to the spa, soft drinks at the pool, laundry up to ten items a day, covered parking with the cars cleaned, electric bikes, and a Citroën 2CV sitting there for anyone who wants to drive it into the hills.

Treatment rooms including a duo cabin, and an indoor pool, which is the part that earns its keep. A May wedding and an October wedding both come with weather you cannot plan around, and a spa with water under a roof gives eighty guests somewhere to be on a wet Saturday morning.

Spa access is included for house guests, and the buy-out carries a minimum spend on treatments, so the Friday afternoon is largely already bought.

Five spaces, and the useful thing about them is how close together they are. Nobody walks more than a minute between any two.

The ceremony goes in the garden facing the pool, and dinner goes in the same garden afterwards. Terraced lawn with stone retaining walls behind, cypresses standing through it, and the valley dropping away past the edge.

Dinner runs here from half past six until half past ten.

Music outdoors is capped at 90 decibels and stops at 10.30pm, which is the cue for the room next door rather than the end of anything.

This is the reason the night works. The ballroom has no sound limitation at all, and the way it keeps none is by shutting: at half past ten the party moves in off the garden and the doors close behind it.

That is the whole mechanism rather than a detail. Closed doors keep the sound off the valley, and a room that holds its own sound does not need a limiter in it, so the band plays at whatever level it likes for three and a half hours.

It runs to 2am as standard, and past that the hotel prices additional hours up to four in the morning.

The hotel’s own dining room and terraces. It carries the cocktail hour before the wedding dinner, the welcome dinner on the Friday if you want it in-house rather than in one of the restaurants, and the Sunday brunch, where the terraces are bought out with rosé and champagne at will.

Where the Friday evening starts. An hour of rosé and canapés looking down the valley, which is the first thing most guests see of Provence and does more for the weekend than anything scheduled.

The private villa: four bedrooms, its own living room and a terrace above the valley. It sits inside the buy-out, and we generally give it to the couple rather than to the largest family group, because it is the one part of the property with a door that closes on the wedding.

Forty rooms and suites, plus the four bedrooms of La Maison de Constance, sleeping up to eighty and slightly more at need. Every guest sleeps in, and that sentence does more work than any other on this page.

Eighty is also the optimal maximum for the wedding itself, so the beds and the guest list are one number rather than two to reconcile. There is no hotel block to hold in a neighbouring village, no coach schedule, no last departure to negotiate, and no question of what happens to the guest who has had a good evening.

The rooms are individually decorated rather than matched, and they range from deluxe rooms through one-bedroom suites with terraces to the signature suites, Baron de Simiane and Duc de Soubise.

The valley-facing rooms are the ones people remember, and we allocate them with the couple rather than taking the hotel’s default.

This is the highest ratio of beds to guests of any property in our Provence collection. Set against Château d’Estoublon, which sleeps twenty against a wedding for 250, it is the exact opposite proposition, and which of the two is right depends entirely on how big the wedding is.

Four kitchens on one property, which is unusual and genuinely useful across three days.

La Table de La Bastide is the wedding kitchen. The cocktail hour, the wedding dinner and the Sunday brunch all come out of it, and it is the room that the catering packages are built around.

Le Clover Gordes is the Provençal restaurant, with a menu signed by Jean-François Piège.

Le TIGrr is the Asian restaurant, and La Bastide de Pierres is the trattoria.

Clover Gordes and Le TIGrr sit outside the buy-out and keep trading through your weekend, which reads to us as a feature rather than a caveat. All three restaurants can host the welcome dinner, so the Friday night can be a trattoria or a tasting menu without leaving the building, and guests who want something else on the Sunday have somewhere to go that is not the wedding.

Gordes sits on a hill in the Vaucluse, inside the Luberon Regional Natural Park, and the hotel is on the Rue de la Combe, terraced into the slope just below the village itself.

The altitude is worth understanding as a practical matter rather than a scenic one. Gordes is high enough that an August evening here is bearable when the Alpilles are not, and high enough that a night in May can want a plan for cold.

Marseille Provence is an hour by road, seventy-three kilometres of it. No US carrier flies there direct, so American guests connect through Paris, London or Amsterdam. British guests fly direct into Marseille daily out of London. Nice is two and three quarter hours away and almost never the right answer from here.

Avignon TGV is 50 minutes and two hours forty from Paris, which is the arrival we push for anyone crossing the Atlantic and continuing south. Aix-en-Provence TGV is about an hour and five.

Worth stating plainly, because no other venue in our Provence collection can say it. The village is a walk, not a drive. Guests explore Gordes on their own for two days without a single transfer being arranged, and the Tuesday market, the château and the lanes are all within a few minutes of the front door.

La Bastide de Gordes is sold one way: a full buy-out, two nights minimum, priced by the unit per night.

The property comes to around €450,000. That is the two nights taken whole, the minimum spend on food and drink and the minimum spend in the spa, together and with VAT.

Every weekend is quoted afresh rather than read off a season, and not in the direction people expect: a September or October date can come in under a June one. We put several candidate dates in front of the property at once and compare what comes back, which is worth more than pressing on any single one.

The exclusions are listed plainly, and they are the wedding: floral decoration, furniture, photography and film, production for sound and light, the entertainment, and the stationery. Each of those lines is marked optional, which is the honest way of saying they are not the hotel’s problem.

Add to that the SACEM music levy at €450 an evening when you bring your own music, and any hours past two in the morning.

Catering comes in several shapes and runs between €300 and €500 a head, the difference being how long the champagne lasts, what the wine is, and whether the spirits carry on through the dancing.

A Magic Day wedding at La Bastide de Gordes starts at €650,000 and lands near €800,000. The property is around €450,000 of it, and everything its own pricing calls optional is the rest.

The ballroom has no sound limit, and that is rarer than it sounds. Every other Provençal property we work with caps the volume all night, from 90 decibels at Château de Tourreau to 93 at Château de la Gaude. Here the cap applies to the garden until half past ten, and then the party goes inside and the doors close behind it. We brief bands on this early, because a group used to playing under a limiter will plan a different set once they know the ceiling comes off.

Nobody drives, and it changes the budget as well as the night. The transport line that runs to five figures at most Provence venues is simply absent here. When we compare this property against an estate an hour away with half the beds, we put the coaches, the drivers and the hotel block into the comparison, because leaving them out flatters the wrong venue.

There is no tariff to read off, so ask about several dates at once. The same two nights come back at different figures depending on when the question is asked and what else is in the book, and a September weekend can undercut a June one. For couples whose dates are movable this is the largest lever on the budget, and pulling it means putting three or four candidates forward together rather than negotiating hard on one.

The village is doing work for you for two days. Guests who can walk into Gordes entertain themselves on the Friday and the Sunday, which means the programme between the events can be genuinely light. We plan fewer organised activities here than anywhere else, and the weekends read better for it.

Fireworks are out, and the reason is the park. The property sits inside the Luberon Regional Natural Park, so a pyrotechnic finale is not available at any price. We design the end of the night around the ballroom instead, which given that the room has no sound limit is not much of a trade.

Two of the four restaurants stay open, and we treat that as an asset. Clover Gordes and Le TIGrr trade through the buy-out. Guests with an appetite at an odd hour, or a family that wants one meal away from the wedding, have somewhere to go inside the building.

The end of the night is a line item, so it should be a decision. Two in the morning is standard and four is available at an hourly rate. That is a real number attached to a real question, and it is the couple’s call, made early, rather than something discovered at half past one by whoever is still holding a credit card.

The buy-out gives you a hotel: forty rooms, a villa, a ballroom, gardens, a spa and a kitchen, with the hotel’s own team running all of it to a standard that needs no help from us. What it does not give you is the wedding.

The property is unusually plain about this. Florals, furniture, photography and film, sound and light, entertainment, stationery, all set out and all marked optional. Those lines are everything the property’s own figure leaves out, and all of what the day actually looks like.

There is a case for a planner who has worked a room with no decibel limit. It is a freedom most Provençal weddings never get, and using it well means designing the half past ten handover so the garden empties into the ballroom in one movement, because the doors have to shut behind it and a party that drifts in over twenty minutes loses the room twice. The other half of the case is the quoting. Nothing here comes off a tariff, so which dates you ask about together decides the answer you get, and that is worth more to a budget than any amount of pressing on one.
