Masseria Grieco wedding

Grieco is six minutes from Ostuni, reached down a long straight drive between dry-stone walls with a ceremonial arch at the end of it. The masseria itself is two storeys with a grand external staircase, and around the square in front of it stand eight trulli, the conical stone huts that belong to this part of Puglia and nowhere else.

The estate is a country resort rather than a working farm: vineyards, lawns, roses, prickly pear in flower, a pool and an animal park. The trulli have been fitted with arched windows and doors and strung with lights. A stone oven faces the square for the evenings when the party eats outside.

Everything here happens around the square and the trulli that frame it, which makes the geography simpler than most venues in this set.

The heart of it, with the masseria on one side and the trulli on the other, lit with strings of bulbs. Ceremonies, dinner and dancing all happen here.

Eight of them, restored and lit from below, forming the backdrop to the dinner. They are the reason to choose this venue over the white masserie nearer the coast, and they photograph unlike anything else.

The threshing floor, where a stretch tent is put up when the weather turns. It is hired separately and it is the only wet-weather answer the estate has.

The stone oven takes a pizza party and the pool a poolside lunch, both of which count towards the extra events the stay requires. Glassware is not allowed at the pool or during the open bar, and the pool closes once the wedding begins.

A Masseria Grieco wedding starts from €100,000 and lands near €200,000 all-in for 60 to 90 guests.

The masseria has not issued its 2027 price list. The only one in our hands is three years old, and publishing it as though it were current would misprice the wedding, so what follows is the structure rather than the figures.

The estate on a sole-use basis with all 25 rooms, for a minimum of two nights midweek or three at a weekend. A location fee covers the lighting, the staff and the cleaning, and is calculated partly on the number of suppliers on site, so a large production costs more than a small one before anybody has eaten.

Three of them. A two-night stay must include one event besides the wedding and a three-night stay two, so a long weekend here is two or three parties. The catering on the wedding day comes from the masseria’s own partner and the open bar from another, and neither can be replaced. And the masseria will only take a wedding that a professional planner is running, which is our part of it rather than theirs.

Holding the extra events somewhere other than the masseria is possible and carries a charge, because the estate closes its restaurant and bar for them.

The flowers and the design; the music, the photography and the video, all of which are free choices from an approved list of suppliers; the Italian music licence; the stretch tent if the weather asks for it; and the transfers.

Twenty-five rooms sleeping between 50 and 65, the higher figure using extra beds and cots. They are white and vaulted, several of them inside the trulli themselves, with arched windows looking onto the square or the olive groves.

Two things to plan around. Every room has a double bed and none can be made up as twins, which is awkward for a guest list of friends travelling individually. And external pets cannot come at all, because the estate keeps an animal park of its own.

At 100 guests the rooms cover most of the list, which is a better ratio than almost anywhere else in this set, and Ostuni is six minutes away for the rest.

The masseria is at Contrada Grieco, in the country between Ostuni and the Adriatic, with the white town on its hill in view.

Ostuni is 6 minutes, Alberobello 36, Savelletri 36 and Polignano a Mare 49. This is the Ostuni side of Puglia rather than the Savelletri side, which means the white town rather than the coast road is what guests do with their afternoons.

Brindisi airport is 44 minutes, the shortest run of any venue here after Moroseta, and Bari is an hour and a half. For a guest list arriving in one afternoon that matters.

The curfew decides everything here and it needs saying at the first meeting, not the last. Midnight on the wedding day is early by any standard, eleven for the other evenings is earlier still, and the masseria has told us in writing that these hours cannot be extended. Everywhere else in Puglia an hour can be bought; here it cannot.

That is not a reason to dismiss the venue.

It is a reason to build the day backwards from midnight instead of forwards from the ceremony.

We always start the ceremony early at Grieco, serve dinner at seven rather than half past eight, and put the speeches between courses, which buys two hours of dancing instead of forty minutes. A couple who wants to dance until three should look at Torre Coccaro or Calderisi instead, and we would say so.

The second thing is that suppliers count towards the hundred. A band, a photographer, a videographer and their assistants are five or six people, and at a venue with a hard ceiling that is five or six guests who cannot come. We count the production into the guest list from the first draft.
