Masseria Potenti wedding

The family came from Manduria, moved north to Milan, and in 2003 bought back a sixteenth-century farmhouse that had fallen into ruin. What followed reads like a slow list rather than a renovation: first oil in 2004, the vineyards revived and the first Primitivo bottled in 2006, their own flour milled from heritage grains by 2010, a yoga shala among the olives in 2020, three villas and a second pool, and a gin distillery in a restored monastery next door.

It is a working organic farm that takes weddings rather than a wedding venue with a farm attached, and the difference shows in the food. The bread and the pastries are baked in the house, the oil and the wine are the estate’s own, and the flowers in the rooms are cut that morning.

The estate has more settings than any other venue in this set, which is either a gift or a trap depending on how early the day is designed.

The heart of it, used for open-air ceremonies, for the aperitivo with live stations, and for candlelit dinners at long shared tables under Apulian lights. It is the space almost every wedding here is built around.

Ceremonies among century-old olives or along the grapevines, and dinner under the trees. Both face the open country rather than the buildings.

The indoor answers, and good ones: the glasshouse takes both a ceremony and a dinner, and the indoor spaces together seat 200 if the weather turns.

Open-air dining under a canopy of Apulian lights, with a stage for a band or a DJ. This is where a party of 200 ends up.

Three smaller rooms for the days either side: a welcome dinner in the cave, a romantic dinner in the trullo where farmers once dried fruit, and pizza nights by the pool from the old wood oven.

A Masseria Potenti wedding starts from €150,000 and lands near €250,000 all-in for 80 to 200 guests.

€10,000 a night plus tax, over a minimum of three nights. That takes the twenty-one rooms, the courtyards, the pool, the hammam, the yoga shala and the grounds, and it closes the estate to everyone else. The three villas, four bedrooms apiece, are hired by the night on top for the families who want them.

Sole use comes with obligations that belong in the first budget rather than the last. At least one meal a day has to be eaten in the restaurant, with a minimum spend of €4,000 a day, because the restaurant is closed to outside guests for the whole of the stay. And any day the party eats somewhere else carries a charge of €3,000 for the kitchen standing idle.

From €180 a head plus tax for the wedding itself: the aperitif, a buffet of ten starters, a first and a second course, a dessert buffet of six, a bottle of wine between four and a bottle of prosecco between six. Themed food corners are added per head, and the after-dinner hours need an open bar package, priced by the head above a hundred guests.

The photography, the music and its licence, and the transfers. The flowers, the lighting, the décor and the event set-ups can all come from the masseria itself, which is unusual and does keep the cost down, though it also means the look of the day is shaped in-house unless a designer is brought in.

Twenty-one rooms in the masseria, sleeping 44, or 62 with extra beds. Two are standard, six are family suites facing the gardens, and fourteen are deluxe rooms with private patios opening onto the garden or the pool. The bridal suite is in the tower and has two bedrooms and a sitting room.

Three villas on the estate add four bedrooms each, with their own gardens, outdoor space and independent access, and they take the total to about a hundred people sleeping on the property.

That number is the point. A hundred guests on site means no coaches at two in the morning, no hotel block to coordinate across four towns, and a wedding that behaves like a house party for three days rather than an evening everyone drives home from.

The masseria is in Contrada Potenti outside Manduria, in the flat vine and olive country of the Ionian side of Salento, with the sea and a flamingo reserve a short drive away and a beach bistro of the masseria’s own beside it.

Brindisi is 56 minutes by road. The masseria says 45, and the difference matters when a hundred guests are being timed off aircraft. Bari is two hours, so it is a fallback rather than a plan.

Lecce is 54 minutes, not the half hour the brochure claims, which changes whether a rehearsal dinner in the city is sensible. Taranto is 51 minutes and the Ionian beaches are closer than either.

No time limit on the party is the headline and it is real. Almost every venue in Puglia sells an hour, negotiates an extension and charges for it; here the masseria simply says there is no curfew, and asks only that the after-dinner hours are covered by a bar package. For couples who have been told midnight everywhere else, this is the difference.

The daily restaurant minimum is the thing to read twice.

Closing a working restaurant for three days costs the family its ordinary trade, and the €4,000 a day is how that is recovered. It is fair and it is not optional, and over three nights it is €12,000 before anyone orders the wedding dinner. We always put both conditions in the first budget rather than the revised one.

The distances are the third thing. Forty-five minutes to Brindisi and half an hour to Lecce are the masseria’s figures; the roads give 56 and 54. That is not a complaint, it is a planning fact, and it decides whether the rehearsal dinner happens in Lecce or at the masseria.
