Castello Monaci wedding

The castle sits in the middle of Salento, on the boundary where the provinces of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto meet, with vines running to the horizon in every direction. It was built in the 1500s and it has never stopped being a farm. The cellar beneath the courtyard is a working winery whose primitivo and negroamaro are poured at the tables upstairs, which is why most people who search the name are looking for the wine rather than the wedding.

What a couple sees first is the avenue: eucalyptus on both sides, a kilometre of it, and then the tower. The building is long and low behind its battlements, with a formal box garden in front and a pool beyond the wall. It is grander than a masseria and less formal than a palazzo, and it has been taking weddings long enough to have the machinery for them.

Four spaces take a full dinner, and the choice between them is mostly a question of weather and of what you want the night to look like.

The indoor room, stone-vaulted, seating 350. It is the reason the castle works from April to January rather than May to September: every outdoor plan here has this room behind it, at the same capacity, so rain changes the view and not the guest list.

Also 350, and named for what gets hung in it. The palms here are tall enough to carry a canopy of lights across the whole dinner, which is the image the castle is known for.

The Corte dell’Edera and the Sala Scudi both take 200, the chapel 120, and the wine museum and the Scuderie garden 150 each. A symbolic ceremony can be held almost anywhere on the grounds; the legally binding one needs a room the comune has approved.

A Castello Monaci wedding starts from €100,000 and lands near €200,000 all-in, for a party of roughly 120 to 250 with the design, the flowers, the music and the photography at the level our couples ask for.

€5,000 on a weekday or a Sunday, €10,000 on a Saturday, at a hundred adult guests. That buys every celebration area of the castle from one in the afternoon until two in the morning, with the parking, the kitchen and the guarantee that no second wedding happens that day. Hours past two are sold in advance.

Below a hundred guests the hire goes up rather than down, and keeps going up as the number falls. The castle is pricing the wedding it is turning away, not the space you are using, which is worth knowing before a small guest list is treated as a saving.

The catering, which comes from the castle’s own kitchen and is charged per head; the flowers and the design; the music and its licence; the photography; the transfers; and the rooms. External caterers are not generally accepted, though the castle opens to them for ethnic menus its kitchen does not cook.

Fourteen bedrooms sleep about thirty. Le Scuderie, the B&B in the converted stables, holds eight double rooms and the bridal suite, which the castle gives to the couple on the wedding night. Casina Metrano, a villa of five bedrooms with a garden of its own, is eight hundred metres up the lane and is let three nights at a time.

This is the part to understand early. The castle does not work as a buyout the way a masseria does, and the rooms are not held for the wedding party: other guests can be staying while you marry, and availability on your date is a separate question from the castle’s. A wedding of any size sleeps most of its guests in Lecce or on the coast and moves them by coach.

The castle is on the SP107 outside Salice Salentino, in the province of Lecce, about as far inland as Salento gets.

This is flat country of vines and olives rather than coastline, and the sea is half an hour away in either direction. Salento narrows here, so a guest can swim in the Adriatic in the morning and the Ionian after lunch.

Brindisi is the airport, 55 minutes by road. The castle’s own guide says 35 kilometres; the route is 44, which is the figure we plan against. Bari is two and a quarter hours and worth it only for a connection that needs it.

Lecce is 37 minutes and is where most guests stay and where the rehearsal dinner usually happens. Ostuni is an hour and a quarter, the Adriatic coast about the same, and Taranto and the Ionian beaches an hour and a quarter west. Nothing here is walkable, so coaches do the work.

The legally binding civil ceremony is the thing to weigh first. Most Puglian venues cannot offer one, so a couple marrying elsewhere in the region either adds a town hall appointment to the wedding morning or marries at home before travelling. At Castello Monaci the whole day happens in one place, which is worth more than it sounds when the alternative is a convoy into Lecce at eleven in the morning.

The second thing is the hours. Two in the morning with no restriction on the music is late for Italy, and the reason is simply that the castle owns the land around it and has no neighbours to answer to. Pair that with a room that seats the full 350 indoors and the weather stops being a risk worth insuring against.

The thing to plan around is the accommodation.

Fourteen beds against 250 guests means the coaches are not an optimisation, they are the design, and the hotel block in Lecce wants booking the moment the date is held.
