Palazzo Daniele wedding

The village is Gagliano del Capo, twelve minutes short of the point where Italy stops. From the street the palazzo is a long stone front with green shutters and two palms, giving nothing away. Behind the door is a courtyard of arches on two levels, big enough to seat a wedding, with a lantern hanging in the middle of it and bicycles against the wall.

The restoration is the reason people know the building. Rather than repaint the rooms, whoever did the work left the plaster where it had worn through, kept the cementine floors with all their patching, and put almost nothing in the spaces underneath the frescoed vaults. A bed, a chair, one piece of contemporary art. It reads as a ruin someone is living in beautifully, and it photographs unlike anywhere else in Puglia.

The palazzo has three spaces that take a dinner and one that takes a ceremony, and knowing the sizes settles most of the planning in an afternoon.

The arcaded heart of the building, open to the sky, and the space every wedding here is built around. It seats 80 guests at a single long arrangement of tables. The arches on both levels mean guests are never quite outdoors, which matters more in October than in June.

The glasshouse room, used as the wet-weather answer and as the second half of a dinner too big for the courtyard alone. It is warmer in feel than the courtyard and smaller.

A long tank of water against an ivy wall, with a stone terrace beside it. It takes an aperitivo easily and a dinner at a push, and it is where the party goes after the tables are cleared.

A domed pavilion in the garden, painted and faded, standing among olive trees. This is the only place a ceremony can be held, and it is small: a few people inside with the rest standing among the trees. It is beautiful and it is not a room for a hundred chairs.

Fifteen suites, and a wedding takes all of them.

A house this size cannot be half let to a wedding and half to strangers, so the buyout is not an upsell, it is the only way the palazzo works. There is an Executive Suite, the Torretta up in the tower, five Junior Suites, three Royal Junior Suites, four Suites and the Black Suite.

They are not hotel rooms in any ordinary sense. Ceilings go up four or five metres and several are frescoed end to end; the floors are the original patterned tiles; one suite has a staircase climbing the wall and another a sunken bath in a vaulted room of bare stone. A steam bath and a sauna sit below, and breakfast is laid for the whole party every morning.

The buyout runs two nights at least, which shapes the weekend rather than constraining it. Guests beyond the fifteen suites stay in Santa Maria di Leuca or along the coast towards Otranto, and come in by car.

Gagliano del Capo is in the last few kilometres of Salento, where the Adriatic and the Ionian come round to meet.

Santa Maria di Leuca and its lighthouse are twelve minutes away, Otranto and its cathedral just under an hour, and Gallipoli about fifty minutes on the other coast. The countryside in between is dry stone walls and old olives, and the swimming is off rocks rather than sand.

Brindisi is the airport, an hour and three quarters by road. Bari is more than three hours and is not worth the drive unless a connection forces it. This is the single hardest thing about the palazzo and it should be said plainly: every guest faces a long transfer at the end of a flight.

Lecce is an hour and ten and is where a pre-wedding night usually happens. Nothing at the palazzo needs a car once guests have arrived, since the village is around the door and the restaurant is inside it, but everything beyond the village does.

A Palazzo Daniele wedding starts from €150,000 and lands near €250,000 all-in for forty to eighty guests. That is a high figure per head, and the reason is the shape of the place rather than extravagance: a buyout of fifteen suites over two nights is carried by a small guest list.

€16,000 a day before tax. It takes the whole palazzo: every suite, the courtyard, the orangeries, the pool, the spa, the restaurant, breakfast each morning and the staff from eight until ten at night. Two nights is the minimum, and more is usual when the party arrives on a Friday.

The catering, which is the palazzo’s own kitchen and charged per head; the flowers and the design, which the palazzo does not touch; the music, whether that is their DJ or someone brought in; the Italian music licence; and the transfers, which at this end of Salento are a real line rather than a small one.

The ceremony question decides whether this venue is yours. There is no civil option, and the symbolic one happens in a pavilion that seats a handful, so couples who want the whole party watching them marry are better served somewhere with a room for it. Couples who marry quietly at home and come here for the weekend get a building that does something no masseria can.

The second question is the hour.

Half past midnight is early, and it is not negotiable, because the palazzo has neighbours on both sides in the way a country estate does not. We always plan the day backwards from that curfew rather than pretending it can be stretched. Dinner starts earlier, the speeches sit between courses instead of after them, and the party gets its two hours rather than its twenty minutes. Done that way nobody notices the limit; done the usual way everyone does.

The last thing is distance. An hour and three quarters from Brindisi at the end of a flight from London or New York is a long tail, and it argues for three nights rather than two so that the journey buys something.
