Masseria Torre Maizza wedding

This is the stretch of coast between Savelletri and Torre Canne where three of the masserie people name first sit within a few minutes of one another. Torre Maizza is the Rocco Forte one: a sixteenth-century farm, whitewashed and squared off, with a watchtower at one end and bougainvillea over most of the rest.

The rebuild gave it 51 rooms, a nine-hole course laid through the olives, a spa, a rooftop bar facing west and a beach club down on the rocks. It is a hotel rather than a house, and that is the thing to understand about marrying here: the machinery is a hotel’s, and so is the comfort.

The sole-use fee privatises everything below, for the whole of the stay, with no outside guests admitted.

Where the ceremony happens, laid out theatre-style for 100 among trees that are several hundred years old. The Bouganvillea Bar takes it in bad weather.

The dinner space, seating 100 with the pool alongside and the masseria behind. The Carosello restaurant, vaulted and white under chandeliers, is the wet-weather answer and seats the same party indoors.

Where the welcome party goes, 100 standing, usually as a street-food night on the evening the guests arrive. A stretch tent is available if the forecast turns.

The sunset rooftop is the aperitivo spot and the orange grove is the quiet one. Neither seats a wedding, and both change what the weekend feels like between the set pieces.

A Masseria Torre Maizza wedding starts from €450,000 and lands near €600,000 all-in for around 100 guests.

That floor is high because of what a wedding here has to include rather than because of what it adds.

All 51 rooms and suites, guaranteed by the couple, for a minimum of three nights. The sole-use fee of €16,000 plus tax then sits on top and buys the grounds: the olive grove, the pool and terrace, the orange grove, the rooftop, both bars, the restaurant, the golf course and the spa, closed to everyone but your party.

The rooms are by far the largest line in the budget, and they are quoted per set of dates rather than from a list, so the figure moves with the calendar. There is no food and beverage minimum, but sole use is only granted if at least two group events happen during the stay, which in practice means the welcome party and the wedding.

The catering, at a per-head menu rate; the wine and the bar; the flowers and the design, including the hire of the reception set-up itself; the photography; the music and the Italian music licence; and the transfers. Children under five are not charged.

51 rooms and suites, all of them yours. Five Superior Rooms and fifteen Deluxe Rooms make up the base, then seven Junior Suite Deluxe, ten Superior Suites and two Deluxe Suites, and the Torre Suite occupies the old watchtower.

The Borgo degli Ulivi wing is the newest part and the one worth knowing about. Four Grand Suites each have a private garden and pool, six Junior Suites open onto their own patios, and the Itria Suite sits above them; together the wing sleeps 22, which makes it the natural home for the two families.

Forty parking spaces come with the hotel, breakfast is laid at the Carosello every morning, and the spa and pool stay open to the party throughout.

The masseria is inland of the coast road, in olive country, with the sea a few minutes away at the beach club.

Ostuni, the white town on its hill, is 28 minutes; Alberobello and its trulli 31; Polignano a Mare, built over its cove, 23; and Monopoli 18. This is the densest part of Puglia for things to do on the days either side of a wedding, which is why three nights here rarely feels like two too many.

Brindisi is 47 minutes and Bari just over the hour, and having both inside an hour is a real advantage for a guest list arriving from several countries. Lecce is an hour and ten, so Salento is a day trip rather than a base.

The economics here are the opposite of most venues, and worth understanding before the figure frightens anyone. You are not paying a hire fee and then finding rooms; you are buying a hotel for three nights, and every guest who sleeps in it is already inside the number. Set against a wedding where a hundred guests book their own rooms somewhere else, the gap is much smaller than it first looks.

What the three nights buy is a weekend rather than a day.

Guests arrive on the Friday to a street-food party in the courtyard, spend the Saturday on the golf course or at the beach club, and go to the ceremony without a coach ride in between. We always plan the arrival evening as carefully as the wedding itself here, because at a buyout it is the evening that sets how the rest of the weekend behaves.

The two-in-the-morning curfew is generous for Italy and the reason is simply that the nearest neighbour is an olive tree. It is the one place on this coast where the party does not have to be rationed.
