Villa Pliniana wedding

A sixteenth-century palazzo standing directly on the water in its own wooded cove at Torno, with a columned loggia over the lake, two ballrooms, eighteen acres behind it and a waterfall running through the grounds.

A Villa Pliniana wedding starts from €350,000, and for optimal results we recommend budgeting €500,000 all-in. The villa is €190,000 plus VAT for the three nights it is let in, with an event fee between €10,000 and €11,000 and a minimum spend on food and drink that starts between €500 and €700 a head.

Up to 150 for a ceremony, seventeen bedrooms, and a house run by the team from Il Sereno five minutes down the shore.

Villa Pliniana, Torno

The villa stands on the eastern shore at Torno, in a cove of its own under a wooded cliff, with its foundations in the water. It was built in 1573 and it has been written about ever since, largely because of the intermittent spring that runs through the building and gave it its name, after Pliny.

Eighteen acres of private ground climb behind it, and almost nothing else is visible from the terrace.

It is run by Sereno Hotels, whose Il Sereno is five minutes down the shore and holds a Michelin star at its restaurant Al Lago, retained in the 2026 guide. The villa comes with that hotel’s staff: a house manager, housekeeping, a concierge team, a private chef and a food and beverage team on site from seven in the morning until half past ten at night.

Villa Pliniana Wedding Venue

The brochure lists the spaces by square metre and by capacity, and the useful way to read them is as a sequence through the day.

The loggia

Columns and arches directly over the water, with a statue at the centre. The ceremony setting, and the image the villa is known by.

The terrace and gardens

Where the aperitif goes, and where a structure stands if the dinner is above eighty.

The two ballrooms

Frescoed, one with a grand piano under a painted ceiling. The larger holds 90 seated and 110 standing, the other 70 and 100.

The courtyard

In front of the main facade, with the lake on the open side.

The pool and spa

A glass structure in the grounds, with the pool inside it, which is unusual in a house of this age and is part of why guests stay three nights rather than one.

Villa Pliniana Wedding Cost

A Villa Pliniana wedding starts from €350,000, and for optimal results we recommend budgeting €500,000 all-in for 80 to 120 guests.

The rental

€190,000 plus 10% VAT, for a minimum of three nights. The villa is explicit about why the minimum exists: the set-up and the dismantling of an event take two of those days, so a one-night wedding is not something it sells.

That figure includes the ten bedrooms of the main villa.

The event fee

Between €10,000 and €11,000 plus VAT, covering the staffing a wedding adds: valet parking, wardrobe, hosts and hostesses, bathroom attendants and portable staff facilities. Housekeeping in the rental covers the common areas only.

The food and drink minimum

This is the number that decides the budget, and it is the one couples read last. The minimum spend starts between €500 and €700 per person. At a hundred guests that is €50,000 to €70,000, which is a third of the rental again.

It covers a welcome cocktail reception, a main menu of three courses and dessert, the wines through dinner, midnight snacks and three hours of open bar to midnight. After midnight, each hour is €4,000 plus VAT.

External catering is not permitted except by special request and for an extra fee, and all beverage service is the villa’s.

The deposits

A refundable damage deposit of €30,000, which rises to €60,000 as soon as the event uses the lawn and historic rooms, because of what structures and two hundred pairs of feet do to turf. Grass damage is charged on top of that, and in a bad case full replacement can be required.

What sits outside it

Flowers, production, lighting, entertainment, photography and the marquee. The villa is let fully furnished, so any rearrangement is quoted as porterage rather than assumed.

Structures, and the Barge

Above eighty guests in forecast bad weather a marquee is mandatory, and the rules around it are more specific than most.

Tents are permitted on the garden and the terrace, sized to the guest count. No ground-anchored stakes are allowed anywhere. Every structure project has to be submitted to the villa for approval at least thirty days before check-in. And the structure is unloaded from a barge on the lake the day before the event, with dismantling finished the day after.

That last detail is the one to plan around. A marquee here does not arrive on a lorry, it arrives on the water, and the day it arrives is a day inside your three-night rental rather than a day before it.

Accommodation at Villa Pliniana

Seventeen bedrooms, of which ten come with the rental.

The main villa divides into four apartments. Suite Anguissola has three bedrooms, Suite Visconti four, Suite Belgiojoso two and Berthier de Wagram one, each with its own living room, dining room and kitchen.

Two more houses stand a short walk away inside the estate. Casa Shelley adds three bedrooms and Casa dei Plini four, each quoted at €31,000 to €32,000 plus VAT for the three nights.

City tax is €5 per person per night and is never in the rental.

Beyond thirty-four beds the answer is Il Sereno, the group’s own hotel five minutes along the shore, which can be added to the booking as a tailored offer rather than booked around.

Villa Pliniana Location, Lake Como

The villa is on the Via Cesare Poggi at Torno, on the eastern shore of the lake’s western leg, about seven kilometres north of Como.

Como is 13 minutes and Milan a little over an hour.

By air, water and air again

Milan Malpensa is an hour and three minutes, Linate an hour and nine and Bergamo an hour and 26. Lugano across the Swiss border is 49 minutes.

The estate has private indoor parking, a boat dock and a helicopter landing pad, which between them cover every way a guest list arrives at a house on this lake. The dock matters most: Torno is on the quieter shore and the road to it is narrow, so bringing guests up from Como by water is faster and better than the drive.

Magic Day Insights

Read the food and drink minimum before you read the rental.

Everything about this villa invites you to compare €190,000 against other villas’ hire fees, and that is the wrong comparison. The minimum spend at a hundred guests adds another €50,000 to €70,000, and it does not move downward. We always model the two together at the real headcount on the first pass, because the answer shifts by more than people expect between eighty guests and a hundred and twenty.

The second thing is the three nights, which is a feature rather than a toll. The build and the strike genuinely take two days at a house reached by a narrow road and a barge, and what the couple gets in exchange is a weekend: seventeen bedrooms, a pool in a glasshouse, eighteen private acres and the family arriving on the Friday rather than on the morning.

The third is that no supplier is imposed on you here except the caterer. On a lake where approved lists are mandatory at most of the grand houses and carry penalties, Villa Pliniana shares the partners it trusts and lets you bring your own. Catering is the exception, though, and the exception is a firm one: a kitchen of your own choosing is a special request with a fee attached, and all beverage service stays the villa’s.

Then there is the lawn deposit. Thirty thousand becomes sixty thousand the moment a structure goes on the grass, and grass damage is charged separately. It is refundable and it is a real cash-flow line, and it belongs in the budget conversation rather than in the contract review.

Common Questions

How much does a Villa Pliniana wedding cost?

A Villa Pliniana wedding starts from €350,000, and for optimal results we recommend budgeting €500,000 all-in. The villa is €190,000 plus 10% VAT for the three nights it is let in, with an event fee of €10,000 to €11,000 on top and a minimum spend starting between €500 and €700 a head. At a hundred guests that minimum alone is €50,000 to €70,000, which makes it the line that decides the budget rather than the rental.

How many guests can attend a Villa Pliniana wedding?

A hundred and fifty for a ceremony. The rooms are smaller than that number suggests: the larger takes 90 seated and 110 standing, the other 70 seated and 100 standing, so a dinner above eighty goes under a structure on the garden or the terrace. We would plan a Villa Pliniana wedding at 80 to 120.

Can we marry legally at Villa Pliniana?

A symbolic ceremony is what happens here. Italy allows a civil ceremony only where the commune has authorised one, so couples complete the legal marriage at home or at a Lake Como town hall and hold the ceremony itself on the terrace or in the loggia over the water.

What is the music curfew at Villa Pliniana?

There isn't one. No curfew, no decibel limit, nothing in the villa's terms restricting the music at all, which on this lake makes it the exception rather than the generous end of a range. What ends at midnight is the open bar inside the food and drink minimum, and every hour after that costs €4,000 plus VAT, a charge for the overnight staffing, the porterage and putting the rooms back rather than for playing on. So the finishing time here is a budget decision, and we still get it written into the contract before signature.

How many people can sleep at Villa Pliniana?

Seventeen bedrooms in total. Ten of them come with the rental, across four apartments in the main villa: Suite Anguissola with three bedrooms, Suite Visconti with four, Suite Belgiojoso with two and Berthier de Wagram with one. Casa Shelley and Casa dei Plini, both a short walk inside the estate, add three and four more at €31,000 to €32,000 each for the three nights, and Il Sereno five minutes away takes the overflow.

Which airport do guests fly into for Villa Pliniana?

Milan Malpensa, an hour and three minutes by road. It is the airport to put on the invitation. Linate is an hour and nine and Bergamo an hour and 26, and Lugano across the Swiss border is 49 minutes. Como is 13 minutes away, which for a villa this remote is closer than it feels.

When is the best time of year for a Villa Pliniana wedding?

June or September. The villa sits in a north-facing cove under a cliff, which keeps it cool in August and shortens the evening light earlier in the year than the open shore, so the shoulder months behave slightly differently here than elsewhere on the lake.
