Villa Treville wedding

The house belonged to writers long before it took guests. In the 1920s the Russian writer Mikhail Semenov bought it and gathered around him the artists who made Positano an address, and in the 1970s Franco Zeffirelli took it on and made it his.

He lived here for thirty-five years and kept adding to it, new gardens, terraces cut into the cliff and pools tucked between them. The theatre of the place is his too: suites named for the people and the operas of his working life, Maria Callas and Leonard Bernstein among them, and fragments of his stage sets still in the rooms.

Zeffirelli’s villa in Positano opened as a hotel in 2016, sixteen suites spread across four villas that step down the rock to the sea. It is in the Michelin Guide’s hotel selection, and it has kept the scale of a private house rather than growing into a resort.

That scale is the point of it for a wedding.

The largest event it takes is 70 guests, and anything over twenty takes the whole property, so a wedding here is never one party among several on the same terraces.

Every space on the property comes with the buy-out, and they sit at different heights on the cliff, so the day moves downhill and back up as much as it moves from room to room. A seated dinner for the full 70 goes on the lawns or on the largest terrace.

The Rotonda garden, and the space the villa’s own events material opens with. It is where we would put the ceremony, civil or symbolic: the sea below, Positano across the water, and the whole of the property’s history at your back.

The villa’s green park, under the pines it is named for. On a property built mostly of stone terraces it is the garden in the literal sense, and the natural room for a dinner that wants to feel like one rather than like a restaurant.

The villa’s own sea access, on the rocks at the foot of the cliff, with loungers and umbrellas and the water straight below. For a wedding it is the morning after, and the landing for guests who arrive by boat rather than by road.

The hotel’s restaurant, named for the man everyone here still calls Il Maestro, looking across the water to Positano. It carries the welcome dinner or the lunch that the buy-out asks for, and the lounge beside it is the room guests drift into when the evening is over and nobody wants to go to bed.

The villa’s bar, and where we start every evening. An hour here before dinner, with the sun going down behind the town, is the first thing most guests will remember about the weekend.

The spa, the gym and the gardens between the villas are all part of the buy-out too, so the four days have places to be quiet in as well as places to gather.

Sixteen suites, twenty bedrooms, forty guests. That is the whole of it, and with 70 at the wedding it means forty sleep in the villa and thirty in Positano.

There are three junior suites and two prestige junior suites, seven signature junior suites, and two signature suites with a private plunge pool or an outdoor bath under the trees. Then the two that take a family each. Romeo e Giulietta, named for Zeffirelli’s film, has two bedrooms and two bathrooms for up to four, with room for a child’s bed. The Zeffirelli suite itself has four bedrooms, its own lounge, two terraces and a plunge pool.

A few of the signature suites take an extra single bed, which is how a family with a teenager stays in the villa rather than in town.

No two suites are alike.

Tiled floors, arched ceilings, the blues and whites of the coast and pieces from Zeffirelli’s own collection, and many of them open straight onto the sea view.

We allocate them with the couple rather than by rate. The Zeffirelli suite, with its four bedrooms, goes to the couple and their closest family, Romeo e Giulietta to another family travelling together, and the rest is a seating plan in its own right.

Staying guests have breakfast, the minibar and the villa’s sea access included, along with the hotel’s boat to and from Positano’s pier in season. The guests in town come to the villa for the events and go home by boat or by road, and that journey is the one piece of the weekend that needs planning to the minute.

The villa is on the Via Arienzo, a few minutes east of Positano along the Amalfi Drive, on the stretch of cliff looking back at the town. Positano’s centre is ten minutes by road, Amalfi twenty and Ravello under half an hour, all of them on a clear road and all of them longer in July.

Naples Capodichino is the airport, an hour and a quarter by road on a clear day and closer to two in high summer. Salerno’s airport looks nearer on a map, but the way there runs the entire coast road east, which is the slow part. For American guests, connecting through Rome or Milan into Naples beats the four-hour drive from Rome Fiumicino.

Napoli Centrale is an hour and five minutes by road, and the high-speed trains from Rome and Milan arrive there. It is the arrival we plan for guests who fly into Rome and would rather not spend four hours in a car.

This is the one we push for.

The hotel runs its own boat to Positano’s pier in season, and a private boat from Naples, Sorrento or Capri lands guests at the foot of the villa without touching the coast road at all. For guests staying in town it is also the nicest way to arrive at a wedding, and the one they talk about afterwards.

Villa Treville is sold one way for a wedding. Any event over twenty guests takes the whole villa, for four nights at least, at €1.2 million before VAT.

Food and drink are quoted per event, and the buy-out asks for at least two catered services for the whole group across the four nights, a lunch or a dinner each. Everything else a wedding needs is outside it: the furniture, the flowers, the music and every other supplier, and a tent for the day the weather turns.

A Magic Day wedding at Villa Treville starts at €1.8 million and lands near €2.2 million. The villa is €1.2 million of it before VAT, and everything the buy-out leaves out is the rest.

Seventy guests and forty beds make the boat the backbone of the weekend. Thirty guests sleep in Positano, and the hotel’s boat runs only in season and only when the sea allows. We plan the road as the backup for every crossing, with cars booked against the boat times, because a wedding cannot wait for the swell to drop.

Four nights is the minimum, so plan four days rather than one. The buy-out asks for two catered services at least, which is the welcome dinner and the wedding itself. The other evenings belong in Positano’s restaurants, or on a boat, and a well-planned weekend here spends as much time off the property as on it.

Under twenty guests, you do not need the buy-out. The villa only requires the whole property for events over twenty. For a wedding of a dozen, it is a hotel you can stay in and marry at, and the cost looks entirely different.

Budget the weather plan from the first conversation. A tent is outside the buy-out, and in April, May or October it is a line in the budget rather than a contingency. The rain plan is a build on a cliff, and it has to be designed alongside the dry one rather than after it.

Everything arrives from the road above or the sea below. The villa steps down the cliff, so every chair, flower and speaker has to be brought down to where it is used. We plan the build over the first days of the stay, while the guests are still arriving, rather than compressing it into the wedding morning.

The buy-out gives you Zeffirelli’s house for four nights: sixteen suites, the terraces, the gardens, the rock and a restaurant. It does not give you the wedding, and the property is plain about it: the food and drink, the furniture, the flowers, the music and the suppliers are all outside its figure.

What makes a planner earn their place here is the shape of the property. There is no ballroom, so seventy people move between spaces at different heights over the day, and thirty of them arrive by boat from a town ten minutes away. Getting that right is choreography, not decoration.
