Château Martinay wedding

Martinay stands in thirty-five hectares on the plain below Mont Ventoux, with the Dentelles de Montmirail to the west. It was built in 1763 by the Isnards, a Provençal family, burnt in part during the Revolution and rebuilt exactly as it had been in 1838, and it has the plain grandeur of that period rather than the prettiness of a bastide.

The approach is the point. An avenue of cypresses, box parterres clipped into scrolls, a gravel forecourt, and then a long pale façade with a pediment. On the other side is the Cour d’Honneur, nine hundred square metres around a central fountain, enclosed and very quiet.

The estate takes no more than twelve receptions a year, which is a policy rather than a boast, and it shows in how little the place feels used.

The château runs a wedding across three days and two nights, and the spaces are used in a settled order.

Where the ceremony happens, between two rows of cypresses with the park beyond. Both symbolic and religious ceremonies are held here.

The dinner space: almost nine hundred square metres of enclosed courtyard around a fountain, and the room that sets the hundred to hundred and twenty. It is also where the outdoor lounge stays open after the music moves inside.

The other façade is larger and more imposing, used for dinners that want scale rather than intimacy, with the sunset behind it.

Indoors, and where the dancing has to go from ten at night. They are the reason the night can run to four.

A Château Martinay wedding starts from €200,000 and lands near €300,000 all-in for 80 to 120 guests.

The château does not separate the hire from the rooms. April and October are €35,000, May and September €43,000, and June, July and August €48,000, and each of those figures buys the same thing: three days and two nights with sole use of every reception space inside and out, the twelve bedrooms for twenty-four people, breakfast and daily cleaning, the park, the heated pool, the tennis and pétanque courts, private parking, a team available around the clock, restroom attendance during the wedding night and a security guard.

An additional night at the château is €5,000. The Bastide next door, five bedrooms in a renovated five-hundred-square-metre house, is booked on top at a rate per night and is not part of the package.

The catering and the wine, which are brought in; the flowers and the design; the music and its licence; the photography; and the transfers. There is no per-head charge from the château at all, which makes the budget unusually easy to model once the caterer is chosen.

Twelve bedrooms sleeping twenty-four, and they come with the package rather than beside it. Seven rooms and suites are in the main house, with premium bedding, air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms in a classic French manner; the other five are in three dependencies, the Loft and the two Pavillons, which are lighter in style and have terraces of their own.

The Bastide du Martinay stands next to the estate: five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms in five hundred square metres, two sitting rooms and a kitchen opening onto a terrace above a stream. Taken with the château it brings the estate to thirty-four people sleeping on site, which for a wedding of a hundred is a good proportion of the party and all of the family.

The château is on the Route de Mazan outside Carpentras, in the Vaucluse plain that runs north from Avignon towards Mont Ventoux.

Avignon is 32 minutes and Aix-en-Provence an hour and ten. Marseille is an hour and twenty-three and Nice three hours, which is further than the brochure’s two and a half.

Marseille airport is an hour and eleven. The better answer for most guests is the train: Avignon TGV is thirty-five minutes from the gate, two hours forty from Paris and fifty minutes from Marseille, which makes a weekend here reachable without a flight for anyone already in France.

The calendar is the first thing and it catches people out. Twelve receptions a year means the good dates are gone eighteen months ahead: when the château wrote to us in 2026, June 2027 was already full and the last weekend of September was the only one left. A couple who likes this place should hold a date before they have finished deciding anything else.

The pricing is the second thing, and it is a relief.

Most French châteaux charge a hire fee, then rooms by the night, then a supplement for the second day, and the real number only appears at the end. Martinay quotes one figure per month that includes the estate, both nights and all twelve bedrooms, and charges nothing per head. We always model this venue against the others on the same page and it usually comes out simpler rather than cheaper, which is worth something of its own.

The hours are the third. Ten o’clock is an early outdoor curfew, though it is the rule across most of inland Provence rather than the château being difficult. What makes it work here is that the art deco rooms are genuinely good rooms and the Cour d’Honneur stays open as a lounge, so the party changes character at ten instead of ending.
