Santa Caterina has been in the same family since 1904. It stands on the cliff just west of Amalfi, a white house and a scatter of villas among lemon terraces and bougainvillea, with a lift cut down through the rock to a seawater pool and the sea.

Hotel Santa Caterina holds two Michelin Keys, the Guide’s distinction for hotels.

Its restaurant, Glicine, holds a Michelin star in the 2026 guide, its third year in a row, under chef Giuseppe Stanzione, a Salerno cook who trained in starred kitchens from California to Thailand and came home to cook Campania.

For a wedding, the family’s hand shows in how little the hotel asks of you. There is no buy-out and no hire for the spaces above sixty adults, and the garden for the ceremony carries no fee at all: the wedding is priced through its dinner.

The garden is set from four in the afternoon, and the ceremony begins at six. The cocktail hour follows on the Terrazza Grottino at half past, and dinner is served in the Al Mare restaurant at around half past seven, never before seven. After dinner the party returns to the Terrazza Grottino, and the music ends at a quarter to midnight.

The garden over the sea, for a symbolic ceremony of up to 70. It comes without a fee, with the table-altar and the chairs set out by the hotel, so the only costs of the ceremony are its flowers and its celebrant.

Below the hotel, down the lift through the rock, are the seawater pool and the hotel’s own place on the water. For a wedding weekend they are the morning after, and a reason guests book a third night.

Sixty-six rooms and suites across the main house and its villas: 36 deluxe rooms, 13 junior suites and 17 in the villas among the gardens. At the size we recommend, the hotel sleeps the whole wedding.

The villas are the ones to know. Il Torrino sits in its own tower, and the Chalet Giulietta e Romeo has its own infinity pool over the sea, which makes it the natural choice for the couple.

Rooms are booked with the hotel directly rather than as a wedding package.

We hold them early, and allocate them with the couple: the villas to the couple and the families, and the sea-view rooms in the main house to the friends who will be on the terrace last.

Santa Caterina is on the coast road just west of Amalfi, a kilometre from the town centre, the cathedral and the town hall. It sits outside the town rather than in it, which is why its gardens are quiet, and why a guest heading into Amalfi either walks fifteen minutes along the road or takes a car.

Naples Capodichino is the airport, just over an hour on a clear road and closer to two hours in July and August. Salerno’s airport is 40 minutes away. For American guests, connecting through Rome or Milan into Naples beats the four-hour drive from Rome Fiumicino.

Salerno station is half an hour away and Napoli Centrale an hour, and both take the high-speed trains from Rome and Milan.

Amalfi’s harbour is a few minutes away, and the ferries and private boats from Positano, Capri and Salerno make the sea the easy way to reach the hotel, or to leave it for a day on the Sunday.

Santa Caterina prices a wedding the simplest way on this coast: through its dinner.

Fifty to seventy is the size this hotel was made for. The garden takes a ceremony for 70 and the restaurant a dinner for 100, but the day comes together when every guest fits the garden and the terrace feels full. We recommend it for weddings of 50 to 70 and plan it to that number.

The ceremony is the cheapest part of the day. The botanic garden carries no fee, and the hotel sets out the chairs and the table-altar, so a ceremony here costs only its flowers and its celebrant. We spend the difference on the flowers.

Plan the evening to a quarter to midnight. Santa Caterina keeps an earlier close than most of the coast, and dinner cannot begin before seven. We schedule the evening so the dancing on the Terrazza Grottino peaks well before the 11.45pm curfew, rather than being cut short by it.

The legal ceremony is a short drive into town. Civil ceremonies happen at Amalfi’s town hall, a kilometre away. We run it as the morning’s ceremony, with the symbolic one in the garden at six, and book the cars so nobody walks the coast road in wedding shoes.

Hold the rooms before anything else. The hotel sells no wedding package, so the rooms are booked like any other stay. We block them the week the date is set.

Hotel Santa Caterina gives you a garden, a terrace and a restaurant over the sea, with a starred restaurant under the same roof, and it asks remarkably little for them. What it does not do is plan the wedding: it has no wedding planner, and the ceremony, the flowers, the music and everything around the dinner are left to you.

That is where a planner earns their place. A wedding for sixty in three spaces a few steps apart is easy to do adequately and hard to do beautifully, and the difference is in how the day moves from the garden to the terrace to the table.
